Out in cinemas this week: In this indie-film week, an angel takes over a man's body (the man, in turn, has to take over a puppy), and a horde of extraterrestrials might just get in the way of one guy's designs on a really hot girl.
Scott Blum used his own planet of origin--Medford, Oregon and environs--as the backdrop for this "micro-budget" encounter between a desperate man and the angel who intervenes by taking over his body, based on Blum's previously published novels.
The story: Don Newport, an engineer, comes face-to-face with his personal destiny under extraordinary circumstances. After losing his job and his health insurance, Don learns that he has a terminal disease, with only a few months left to live. On his deathbed, he meets Robert, a brazen angel of death who promises to help him with a graceful exit. As Don prepares to say his last goodbyes to his loving wife, Robert attempts to change Don’s perspective about his mortality and proposes an exceptionally unique option.
Directed by: Scott Blum.
Starring: Danforth Comins (Don/Robert), Miriam Laube (Suzanne), Catherine E. Coulson (Nurse), Renee Hewitt (Cynthia), Brandy Carson (Animal Shelter Volunteer), Brad Whitmore (Officer Mac Williams).
Spanish filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes) wrote, directed, and produced this smart take on that classic comedic situation: how to make headway with a girl you like while there's an alien invasion going on and the girl's boyfriend is about to find out about you.
The story: Everyone knows what to do if one morning the sky would be absolutely full of UFOs: run as fast as you can. However, what would happen if the invasion started while you are in the flat of the girl of your dreams, the one you have just met?
Directed by: Nacho Vigalondo.
Starring: Michelle Jenner (Julia), Carlos Areces (Ángel), Julian Villagran (Julio), Raúl Cimas (Carlos).
