The Web Planet

BBC

Overview: On the planet Vortris, the Doctor ends up helping the Menoptra, a butterfly-like race, against the parasitic creature Animus and its ant-like Zarbi and larvae-gun creatures. (6 episodes)

Regulars: The Doctor (William Hartnell); Ian Chesterton (William Russell); Barbara Wright (Jacqueline Hill); Vicki (Maureen O'Brien).

Memorable Guest Performance: The Animus, voiced by Catherine Fleming, is a constant presence, memorable for its peculiar dialog.

Great Line: Hetra, one of the tunnel-dwelling Optera, describes digging in what's meant to be an alien way: "A silent wall. We must make mouths in it with our weapons, then it will speak more light."

First Seen: This is the first Who with an entirely nonhuman supporting cast.

The Last Refuge: The Doctor and company join the Menoptras' war on the Animus, which is eventually destroyed.

Watchability: It's a valiant and ambitious effort at worldbuilding, but it just doesn't work, and at six episodes there's rather too much of it. But credit should be given for the attempt.

Production Details: Broadcast Feb. 13-Mar. 20, 1965. Written by Bill Strutton. Directed by Richard Martin.

Home Video: "The Web Planet" is not yet out on DVD.
