The nominations for the 2007 Primetime Emmy Awards are out, and though both the popularity and quality of science fiction and fantasy television is still underrecognized (as I have discussed elsewhere), this year significant props have been extended to two top-notch genre shows, Heroes and Battlestar Galactica.

As was widely anticipated, Masi Oka, who plays the unquenchable teleport Hiro Nakamura on Heroes, was singled out for a Supporting Actor nomination. Both series are up for directing (for “Genesis” and “Exodus, Part II,” amusingly enough – too bad Stargate SG-1 didn’t do an episode called “Deuteronomy”) and for visual effects (“Five Years Gone” and “Exodus, Part II”, both eminently deserving of the award). Heroes also got nods for art direction, sound mixing, and editing (all for “Genesis”), as well as for stunt coordination. Meanwhile Battlestar was nominated for writing (Ronald D. Moore’s “Occupation/Precipice”) and for sound editing (“Exodus, Part II” again).

If a sci-fi drama beyond these two hits were going to be nominated it would be in the visual effects category, and sure enough the quirky Eureka appears alongside its better-known NBC Universal stablemates in that category. In addition, a non-fiction nomination went to History Channel documentary, Star Wars: The Legacy Revealed.

The 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, September 16, 2007 on FOX at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.
