This Week: TV | Film | Video | Hardcovers | Paperbacks |

Out on DVD and Blu-Ray this week: Two seminal actors caught in a time loop, and life gets stranger for a houseful of supernatural creatures in Boston.

Looper (2012)

Looper
TriStar Pictures

It's hard to craft a time travel movie without some of the clever twists being crashingly obvious in retrospect (the bandaged-faced marauder is really Hector 2!!), so Looper takes the wiser course in making the suspense hinge on the conflict and the nature of both Joes' problems. It's smart, novel, and fun. Meanwhile, if Joseph Gordon-Levitt actually turns out to age into Bruce Willis, I don't know if that's crazy, awesome, or crazy awesome.
Formats: Blu-Ray, DVD, UV Digital Copy.
The story: In 2072, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent 30 years into the past, where a hired gun awaits. Someone like Joe, who one day learns the mob wants to 'close the loop' by transporting back Joe's future self.
Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Joe), Bruce Willis (Old Joe), Emily Blunt (Sara), Paul Dano (Seth), Noah Segan (Kid Blue), Piper Perabo (Suzie), Jeff Daniels (Abe), Pierce Gagnon (Cid), Summer Qing (Old Joe's Wife), Tracie Thoms (Beatrix), Frank Brennan (Old Seth), Garret Dillahunt (Jesse), Nick Gomez (Dale), Marcus Hester (Zach).
Directed by: Rian Johnson.
Features: Audio Commentary: Writer/Director Rian Johnson and Actors Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt; Deleted Scenes (HD, 36:50); The Future from the Beginning (HD, 7:52); The Science of Time Travel (HD, 8:29); Scoring Looper (HD, 16:18); Looper Animated Trailer (HD, 1:34); Previews (HD).

Being Human: The Complete Second Season (2012)

Being Human: The Complete Second Season

If the North American Being Human didn't come into its own in season 1, it certainly did in season 2, in which the sketched plot frameworks of the UK series serve as the basis for the development and intense intreraction of these three new and potent characters.
Formats: Blu-Ray and DVD (4 discs).
The story: The second season focuses on the trials and tribulations of vampire Aidan (Sam Witwer), ghost Sally (Meaghan Rath), and werewolf Josh (Sam Huntington).
Starring: Sam Huntington, Meaghan Rath, Sam Witwer, Mark Pellegrino, Gianpaolo Venuta, Kristen Hager, Sarah Allen.
Features: Making of Featurette (HD: 1:00:56); Being Human Panel from San Diego Comic-Con 2012 (1080i; 48:30); Being Human Problems (1080i; 5:00).
