There are two kinds of Apocalypse movies: those that are about the Apocalypse as a dramatic event, and the ones in which the imminent end of the world is the instigating catalyst for a character quest. Steve Carell is exactly the wrong person for the first type, but there's something so human about him that he's the ideal guide to the journey toward the end.

The story: As an asteroid nears Earth, a man finds himself alone after his wife leaves in a panic. He decides to take a road trip to reunite with his high school sweetheart. Accompanying him is a neighbor who inadvertently puts a wrench in his plan.

The book was a carefully balance summer-read mash-up, an inquisitive twirling of different kinds of modern folklore told with a wink and a quirky smile; but the people that made this movie saw the meat-cleaving gore that was the framework but not the meaning.

In the beginning, given that it's slotted between universally known feature films, the chief fan approach to The Clone Wars was an owlish inquest into its potential continuity with the existing Star Wars oeuvre. By the time that we've reached season 4, there's something more going on. Clone Wars, as a series, has accumulated its own life and purpose, and stories and characters that give it a reason to exist on its own merits.
