Catherine Tate Will Rejoin Doctor Who for All of Season 4

I thought everyone agreed that Catherine Tate’s Donna was a lot of fun in “The Runaway Bride,” the 2006 Doctor Who Christmas Special – but she was too obnoxious to be a regular companion. Even executive producer Russell T. Davies told Doctor Who Magazine in January that they hadn’t considered letting her stay on board the TARDIS at the end of the one-off episode, because “she'd get on your nerves.”

Get ready to give those nerves a run for their money. According to a news report posted on the official website, the popular comedian has accepted an offer to return as a companion for the entire run of next year’s season 4.

"Catherine was an absolute star in ‘The Runaway Bride’ and we are delighted that one of Britain's greatest talents has agreed to join us for the fourth series," said Davies, announcing his change of heart about Donna.

Tate, who also worked with Who star David Tennant in a recent charity special, sounds just as excited: "I am delighted to be returning to Doctor Who. I had a blast last Christmas and look forward to travelling again through time and space with that nice man from Gallifrey."

Though Tate has a lot of appeal, this decision is frankly baffling. Still, as with all things Doctor Who, I will keep an open mind and see how they make it work.

Why is everyone so negative about her? Give her a break.

Rumors of Russel and David leaving at the end of season four make me wonder. the idea of expanding Martha by having her in Torchwood and giving the Doctor a second copanion might be a way offortifying the series before the exits

It’s good to hear that there’s support for Donna out there. Most of what I’d heard up to the annoucement was of the same tenor as Russell Davies’s January comment that she was a lot of fun but might be trying in large doses. However, Catherine Tate can act, which means that the writers will be able to give us a Donna the fans will love. I’m looking forward to seeing it happen.

“Catherine was an absolute star in ‘The Runaway Bride” ROFLMAO!?! no one will watch the episodes with her. I’m going to watch Torchwood now. With Martha it will be a lot better..
