Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are adapting the largest of the Song of Ice and Fire novels by author George R.R. Martin, A Storm of Swords, and Benioff has already said that some of the moments they'll be covering this season are what he's been looking forward to bringing to the screen since the beginning.
So they've successfully lobbied HBO for more time per episode. The next season will still have 10 episodes, but each one will now clock in at 56 or 57 minutes long--as opposed to the 52-minute episodes we normally get.
Game of Thrones season 3 premieres on Sunday, Mar. 31. Season two, meanwhile, will be out on home video a few weeks before, on Feb. 19. (Season 1, of course, is already out on DVD and Blu-Ray, including in a collector's edition complete with a dragon egg.)
