A couple weeks ago (rather late, one would think), the BBC started revealing the nature of this year's Christmas special, "The Snowmen," with the first adventure for new companion Clara and a guest villain played by former alternate Ninth Doctor Richard E. Grant.
For those wanting a further sneak peak, here are some images from the production.
As for trailers and such, you can also check out Doctor Who: The Great Detective (Christmas Special Prequel), the Doctor Who Christmas Special Trailer 1, BBC America Winter Trailer.
Meanwhile, all of us Doctor Who fans are like, yes, yes, Christmas special, very exciting. But what about 2013? You know, the fiftieth anniversary? Well, the BBC has just announced that, yes, it certainly is the 50th anniversary. In a press release passing mention so brief and subliminal as to almost amount to code, BBC One Controller Danny Cohen's 2013 commissioning statement confirms a "Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special" (singular).
What exactly this commission refers to is not at all clear--it may only be this, or it may be something entirely different. Fans should bear in mind that this special, presumably outside the ordinary commission for the series, would be in addition to whatever recognition of the anniversary will be built into season 7.5 and whatever else airs in 2013.
Either way, get ready for several more months of Steven Moffat winking at us on Twitter.

Series 8 won’t launch until Fall of 2014. They are doing two specials – a BBC1 special and a BBC Docu-Drama penned by Mark Gaitis called Adventures in Time and Space. There are rumors of a third “special” no related to the 50th, that will be Matt Smith’s leaving the show, and then a new doctor will be introduced in the fall of 2014.
Have you seen this video? Someone’s recorded a video of the BBC filming a scene from the 2012 Christmas Special and uploaded it to YouTube! It’s actually amazing! I saw it and just had to share it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7q1P5–ZWw
Is it that demanding of a job that the “doctors” dont stay that long? They just seem to get into the grove of him and then they leave. Very many more and he will be a child when he regenerates.
