But despite coming from Moira McMahon, whose television background involves handling medical research for Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice, it appears that Maddox isn't a medical series with paranormal overtones, like the aforesaid A Gifted Man, so much as a drama about a medical and technological utopia with a dark side, as unearthed by a family that moves into the seemingly idyllic community.
Peter Traugott and Rachel Kaplan will executive produce the pilot; Traugott was an EP on the sitcom Samantha Who?, and he and Kaplan both have a number of new pilots in the works for next year.
McMahon's origination of this pilot script was highlighted by IndieWire as one of a small spate of female writers making headway in Hollywood recently; but is there as much of a gender gap in sci-fi/fantasy writing, I wonder? When I think of proven writers of recent genre series, names like Jane Espenson and Julie Plec leap to mind. It's worth exploring as new development deals get made for 2013.
