Thanks to some last-minute recasting, scene-stealing beauty Elizabeth Mitchell, a veteran of Lost and one of the best things in the reboot of V, will be a regular on the NBC post-apocalyptic series Revolution.

The high-buzz new series is a collaboration of Lost creator J.J. Abrams and Supernatural creator Eric Kripke, which means this will be a reunion for Mitchell and Abrams. And thanks to both Lost and V, Mitchell has plenty of experience playing characters dealing with a radically changed world.

Mitchell will play Rachel Matheson, the mother of Charlie Matheson (Tracy Spiridakos) and Danny Matheson (Graham Rogers). The character, played in the pilot by Andrea Roth of Rescue Me, will appear in the series in flashbacks.

Revolution already features a small cluster of actors who can make any character fascinating, including Billy Burke, Giancarlo Esposito, and Tim Guinee; adding Mitchell to that mix makes this series even more must-see.

Also joining Revolution is Friday Night Lights survivor Daniella Alonso, who has landed the role of Nora on the show. Kripke describes her as a "rebel fighter, battling against the militia that controls North America. And she's got a lot of rough water under the bridge with Miles, Billy Burke's character. And she likes to blow stuff up."

I am really looking forward to this show. I can imagine so much potential with the premise of a world reeling in the aftermath of losing electricity. Many people, including myself, have dealt with the situation for a limited time span (power outages due to storms; rolling blackouts). My curiosity is in overdrive about the direction Revolution will take. Hopefully, the show will be heavy on character, and how the survivors deal with the radically new situation, and light on preaching about the evils of technology.

Update to my July 4, 2012 comment:

Although Revolution’s broadcast premiere is later this month, NBC posted the show’s pilot on-line. I watched it.

I give the pilot 2.5 out of 5 stars.

No Spoilers:

Successes: The premise of all the electricity in the world going “poof!” is an intensely interesting mystery. Many of the actors performances are good to very good. Some of the visuals are stunning.

Failures: The aspects of the post-apocalyptic world shown in the pilot are very similar to many, many movie versions of agrarian/feudal societies. At times, the background music is reminiscent of renaissance festival music. They need to stop that. I expected, hoped for, something fresh in terms of the post-electricity societies. Maybe it’ll come in later episodes.

In the pilot, one character is endearing, and a few are very interesting. Some are kept just this side of being cliche by the individual actor’s talent, and strong performance.

I think Revolution is absolutely worth an initial look. While not fabulous, I think the pilot is middle-of-the-road good. I’m not excited about the next episode, but I’ll definitely watch it.
