Americans are just now experiencing the end of season 4, but production on season 5 of Merlin is already under way in Wales and France. With the show advancing rapidly through the existing Arthur-Merlin-Camelot tropes, especially in these last 13 episodes, what conceptions of the legend are next for the series? The cast and crew have a few hints and speculations for you. Stop reading now if you want to stay a Merlin season 5 virgin:
Colin Morgan as Merlin.
Colin Morgan (Merlin): "Merlin revealing his magic is definitely going to be the ultimate test for Arthur and Merlin, and I think it might be explored in the fifth season," Morgan says. "The levels of trust between friends is one thing, but Arthur's distrust of magic is something that runs longer than he and Merlin have been friends. It will take much more influence and much more work to break and to overcome. Certainly we're entering into that territory, but it's never going to be an easy task for Merlin. Still, it has to happen sooner or later." Well, yeah.
Katie McGrath (Morgana): "I'd like Camelot to realize that Morgana has a point. The persecution is unjust, and that magic has a place in the kingdom." This from the woman who just took over Camelot--again!--and tortured the knights and oppressed the peasants--again. Poor misunderstood thing.
Johnny Capps (co-creator): "I think the return of Mordred would be very interesting." Would it now? I wonder whether that will be happening sometime in the foreseeable future, then. Given that Asa Butterfield, who played young Mordred, is now more of a star thanks to his success in Martin Scorsese's Hugo, bringing him back will be interesting for the show in the real world, too.
