What is it about angels and their obsession with mortal love? ABC picked up the latest iteration of the concept, an original script concept for a drama titled The Watchers from bestselling romance novelist Nicholas Sparks (The Notebook), about an archangel in love.

The project is about the Archangel Raphael, who tosses his wings in favor of love with a mortal. (Hopefully this will be a more sympathetic Raphael than the one we've seen on Supernatural.) Sparks and Kristin Hahn are writing the script.
Sparks has seen six of his books adapted into films, most famously The Notebook and the latest being the unloved Miley Cyrus vehicle The Last Song, for which he also, for the first time, wrote the screenplay as well; but this would be his inaugural television project, even as the film adaptations relentlessly continue (Safe Haven is next).
Regarding The Watchers, Sparks told Deadline, "I've always wanted to create a smart, unconventional show about angels on Earth, and ABC is the perfect home for this kind of imaginative, character-driven drama." Meanwhile, we can continue to imagine all the rest of the gorgeous angels up in heaven, pining for the comely humans they watch over night and day, and their envy for the gutsy Raphael.
