Bizarrely, the renewal is being seen as proof that its odd-couple pairing with WWE Smackdown on Friday nights has worked out: Sanctuary has been keeping a good chunk of the wrestling bloc's sizable audience.
The show is simultaneously being renewed by SPACE, which co-produces the series. Series creator and executive producer Damian Kindler singled out the Canadian network: "We're thrilled about the extraordinary support SPACE has provided since the beginning," Kindler said. "They were the first to recognize Sanctuary's potential and are the foundation upon which all of our success rests."
So production will be getting under way soon in Vancouver on 13 new episodes, a return to the show's formerly requisite short seasons after a 20-episode season 3. Presumably the decision has to do not so much with confidence in Sanctuary as with Syfy's scheduling, which has tended toward 13-episode seasons lately, or budget contraction. Since Syfy has been systematically programming its 20-episode series as two ten-episode seasons, an unbroken 13-episode season might actually be a better storytelling choice, at least for a show like Sanctuary that likes its story arcs. Still, it does mean less Sanctuary next year.
Season 4 is slated for a fall premiere on Syfy. The second half of season 3 will play out in the spring.

Love the fact that Sanctuary is back. Was confused with the Hollow Man episode – Tesla was left back at the Sanctuary but when the Praxis issues were resolved, he seems to have disappeared without notice. Did I miss something? Did the writers forget about him? Hope to see more of him this season. Love the wit and sarcasm, plus he’s not bad to look at!
Why was the character Ashley killed off? I miss her and thought the team of Will, Magnus and Ashley had better chemistry then this new bunch. It seems the story lines are now getting away from mixing sci-fi and history which is what drew me to the show in the first place and now more on special effects gun fights and crashes, etc.. Still watching hoping to see if Magnus and Will ever hook up but really missing the old gang!
