The Golden Globe nominations for films and television released in 2008 just came out, and as with the Oscar and Emmy nominations it's great sport to pick them apart for the extent to which the contributions of science fiction and fantasy are recognized.

This year the choices in sci-fi and fantasy were few but interesting. Leading the list with 5 nods was a drama with supernatural overtones, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (to be released Christmas Day). Button's use of fantastic elements as a means rather than an end is a welcome deviation from the recent obsession with excessive special effects in films that are branded primarily as "fantasy."

Also nominated: Heath Ledger's amazing performance in The Dark Knight, the animated film Wall-E, and True Blood, with garnered two nods – one for best television drama, and one for its star, Anna Paquin.

A full discussion is here. The complete list of nominees is here.
