When Torchwood returns for a brief, five-episode third season in 2009, it's also set to air on BBC America, where Torchwood has gained the highest ratings in the cable network's history.

"We've decided to do a five-part mini-series, one big story that will run during one week," Torchwood executive producer Julie Gardner told TV Guide in June. "I wanted to make a really big noise about the show."

At Comic-Con in San Diego, it was officially announced that Torchwood season 3 will air on BBC America shortly after originally airing on BBC1 in the U.K. The five-episode mini-series may air in Britain as a week-long event, but BBC America is less likely to do so here. The first two seasons were both 13 episodes.

The only casting we can be sure of is John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness) and Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper). Gareth David-Lloyd (Ianto Jones), featured alongside Myles in the Doctor Who finale two-parter "The Stolen Earth"/"Journey's End", is to return, but may be marginalized if the show is streamlined and, if rumor holds true, the show's racier content is reduced in deference to younger fans.

The denouement of "Journey's End," which saw Jack walking off with Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) seemingly trying to woo her away from UNIT, with Mickey Smith (Noel Clarke) catching up to both of them after having expressed a need to carve out a new future for himself, was also very suggestive to those wondering about who would be in Torchwood's third season. Some rumors have stated that Agyeman will definitely be a regular for season 3, and I think it's likely to turn out to be true. (Rumors also suggest Barrowman will be reducing his involvement, with the show's focus presumably shifting to Gwen and Martha.)

(Update: as noted by a commenter below, The Sun has reported that the BBC dropped Agyeman from Torchwood season 3 after she signed on to do the ITV version of Law & Order. As The Sun's record of accuracy regarding dramatic TV show casting is quite spotty, we'll need more info, especially as no announcements regarding casting have been made for the ITV show; but word is spreading that both Agyeman and Battlestar Galactica's Jamie Bamber will be in Law & Order: London.)

On the other hand, nothing about cast changes has been announced or confirmed, and the Doctor Who/Torchwood creators are more than capable of teasing us. A Torchwood line-up of Barrowman, Myles, Agyeman, Clarke, and David-Lloyd would certainly be interesting – not to mention oversaturated with Who alumni.

Burn Gorman (Dr. Owen Harper) and Naoko Mori (Toshiko Sato) both had their characters killed off in the Torchwood season 2 finale.

BBC Worldwide America programming chief Richard De Croce said that Torchwood's return was very good news for BBC America, not just because of the ratings – it's also a great fit. "Torchwood really represents the essence of the channel – it's sexy, action-packed, and a little bit subversive," he said.

Torchwood season 3 will have a new producer, Peter Bennett, who has previously worked on Torchwood, Doctor Who, and such films as The Mummy, A View to a Kill, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Who veteran Euros Lyn will direct the mini-series.

(1) Nina says:

Actually, it was confirmed by Julie Gardner, in an interview done at ComicCon, that Jack and Ianto will remain a couple in Series 3. Since it will be airing post-watershed, it’s likely the level of raciness won’t significantly change, (but I think the fans were hoping for even more.) As for Martha…Freema Agyeman has signed with a competing network, ITV, to do Law and Order, so rumor has it that the BBC was unhappy and Russell had to rush to write her out of Series 3. (Speculation is that’s why he didn’t make it to ComicCon as previously scheduled…rewrites.)

Personally, I’d be very happy if they didn’t add any more principle characters. Between Jack, Ianto, and Gwen there are plenty of possible stories to tell for a season that’s only having a five episode run.

pfft rumours. Anyone can make up a rumour.

“Personally, I’d be very happy if they didn’t add any more principle characters. Between Jack, Ianto, and Gwen there are plenty of possible stories to tell for a season that’s only having a five episode run.”

You also have to take into account that Torchwood will likely be needing characters for a 4th series if they can get one.

(3) K says:

Well there’s only going to be 5 eps, she could potentially do both… Sour grapes is a poor reason to completely muck up a show’s entire season.

I don’t suppose we’ll get to see Law & Order London in the States, that would be great.

I think they should have way more than 5 esp! I’m Torchwood’s and Doctor Who’s #1 fan and I miss the show! I think Noel Clarke and Freema should be on the show 4 sure! John Barrowman should pretty much stay the main character!

(6) supergreen says:

Several things are wrong there.

1. Speculation that Captain Jack will be standing back is an extremely old rumour and has since been dispproved by the comic con panel.
2. Speculation that the show will be streamed and censored for a younger audience is also an extremely old rumour and was dispproved by both Julie Gardner and John Barrowman saying it will be bigger and more intense than the previous two seasons, said at comic con.
3. Gareth David-Llyod will stay very much a main character as they’re hoping to develope Ianto’s past AND the relationship Ianto and Jack are currently harbouring, once again, said at comic con by Julie Gardner and GDL himself.

I find it extremely dumb to say that they will pull any of the three remaining team members out of the spotlight – they simply wouldn’t do it after that finale. They left fans wanting to see how the three of them coped and wouldn’t be stupid enough to lose any of them.

Plus (final thing) Torchwood was created as a platform for Captain Jack Harkness to do his thing and be the hero – why would they even think of continuing it without himin the foreground?

I’d urge people not to fuel stupid rumours in this.

The only certified things so far are that:

1.It’s going to be 5 episodes long
2. It’s going to be a continuous storlyine spanning the 5 episodes.

Personally, as much as I’d like to see Mickey in the show, it’s huighly unlikely due to Noel Clarke’s rapidly heightening career in cinema and production.

(I would be happy for it to be all about Ianto and Jack for the rest of it’s lifetime…)

(13) Noel says:

Would love it if they extended the 5 episodes and have a “second half” to the season. Then they could have guest appearances for Martha, Mickey, Owen, or/and especially Tosh (my favorite). Here’s hoping for some great surprises from the Torchwood production team.

(14) wyldtyger76 says:

Torchwood will not be the same without Dr. Owen Harper. He started out in season one by irritating the shit out of me, but as time progressed, he became my favorite character. It really pissed me off to see them kill him off. The season 2 finalé was very difficult to watch and very emotional. I shall miss the character of Dr. Owen Harper. Even Tosh’s elimination was unnecessary. I also found Ianto to be irritating at first, but after seeing hie emotions over the finality of Lisa, his character started to expand and grow. I very much enjoyed his development in season 2. I look very much forward to season 3, but it just won’t be the same.

(20) cptnjackfan says:

I think Torchwood is one of the best scifi shows ever done. We need more than 5 episodes. Don’t get rid of Jack or Gwen. Martha can go. I miss Owen. Not sure Tosh ever developed into an interesting character. More monsters and rifts. Love it.

Far from stupid, it’s important to show these characters aren’t all invincible (Jack aside of course), that they are human and they can die. It’s the same with any show of this kind, killing off the odd main character from time to time (CSI, Spooks, Dr Who, Torchwood…all that kind of thing sci-fi and otherwise).

It is kind of a downer that S3 is only going to be 5 episodes long, especially after the last few eps of S2…but I guess they know what they’re doing. I’ll look forward to it either way.

any ideas as to the air dates?
plus the 5 episodes is going to leave people clinging to the edges of their seats until the next season!

only 5 episodes of torchwood and 4 of doctor who is disappointing. without owen and tosh idt it’s gunna be the samee.. like they kinda made torchwood what it was. the team had all the proponents to making it work.. like how are they gunna deal with the tech stuff now. and like biopsies… ahh the killing off of owen just makes me not want to watch it.

Spoilers btw!

(33) Robert says:

I was on the BBC website and they said that Torchwood series three’s more racier (sex) content is being cut down for the show younger audience. What the? And it’s not that the sex is going because I don’t give a about that, but it’s the fact that theyr’e making it more suitable for a younger audience. The whole point of Torchwood is so that teenagers and adults can watch aliens whilst little kids can watch Doctor Who (which, by the way, is totally bad now) and I don’t why children should be allowed to watch Torchwood just because Doctor Who is full of it!

January 4, 2009 at 1:35 pm
(34) ... says:

Does anyone know when series 3 will be aired??? I think its unfair that we only get a 5 part series, you’d think that with not having a full series of doctor who this year they would at least give us a proper series of Torchwood!! >:( The BBC would be very stupid to write out any of the remaining team, expecially Jack, i mean isn’t he what the show is all about? and like a lot of you i want to see more of Jack and Ianto’s relationship, and they would be stupid to end the series after a 3rd series. Is there anyone but me who doesn’t really like the look of the new doctor to? I’d prefere it if David tennant stayed but oh well, i guess we will have to put up with it, alothough me and my group of dr who fans were planning on kidnapping david tennant to make him change his mind.. anyone want to help? And i would do the same to the torchwood cast if any of them decided to leave now, after tosh and owen, they cant, they would be getting rid of the whole team and i think that if they did that then their ratings would take a nose dive! phew i think thats it, i can talk to my dr who fans about dr who but not torchwood, they arnt followers (how very dare they!)
Oh yeh i will recommend Heroes to you all too, its a good show, so when it comes back on when we have nothing to watch, try it! expecially if your a fan of blood and gore… theres plenty of that but if your a tad scweemish dont worry, just close your eyes when sylar does his evil stare(watch it and you’ll know who and what i mean)

(35) Claire says:

Has anyone else noticed that both Doctor who and Torchwood seem to be changing their target audience. Doctor who is turning into a show for much younger kids sort of 8-10 year olds rather than it being a family show, and Torchwood was oringinally a adult show but is now being gradually toned down more and more to make it suitable for younger kids. I also hope the romours about John Barrowman not playing such a big part arn’t true, much as I love Gwen and Martha it’s supposed to be Jacks spin-off. Why does everyone have to keep changing everthing, why can’t we just stick with what clearly works.

(36) ... says:

Clair i know what you mean! as far as i know series 3 of torchwood is going back to being just an adults version so it shouldn’t be toned down any, hopefully not anyway, the bbc will soon realise that if they change it too much their ratings will go down so they will hopefully use their common sense and change it back to how it was, if not a heap full of complaints should do the trick (hint hint!) and with doctor who the guy who wrote episodes such as the empty child, the doctor dances and blink is taking over as head writer so hopefully he will be writing some better story lines, seeing as hes written some of the best one so far, don’t his episodes just give you the creeps? they do me so im hoping for the same standard for all of the episodes from now on seeing as he is no head writer, then again if matt smith turns out to be a rubbish doctor they cant be very good, i really dont like the look of him, he looks more like sylars apprentice in heroes than the next doctor what were they thinking?!?!?! And i asked before and i’ll ask again, does any body know when series 3 of torwood is due to be aired in the uk?? im dying to find out! I cant wait for the next series, too bad its only a mini-series :’(

(37) Kayelle Allen says:

I started watching Torchwood because so many friends told me what a great show it was and that Capt Jack was openly gay. I write gay romance, so I was interested to see how his sexuality was handled on the show. I downloaded both seasons on iTunes and loved them! As for the heat level, I certainly hope no one turns that down! I’d rather see it go up. Way up! Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is one of my favorite episodes – especially the bar fight scene. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched it.

Season 3 having only five episodes… Of course I’ll download them the moment they’re available, but it’s like having 5 M&M candies when you want the entire bag. Became a Dr Who fan when I found out Capt Jack Harkness had been on the show. I’m working my way thru the Who episodes now. I had no idea Torchwood was a spin-off. Thanks for all the good info here. Being new to the entire Torchwood universe, I’m soaking it up and enjoying every drop.

i really think that the spacing of the series is a bit much. a yr to wait to only be filled with 4 solo who events, then into series 5 for the new doc to emerge. its a bit much. i would personally like to see doc’s daughters adventures or her joining up with him. an as for the face o bo…well that would be an interesting tale…we have seen jack’s start in the torchwood, then some solo events of his…but a story of the way he finally is the giant head in a jar would be nice. inset with the doc’s that he meets in the series spots. that would be nice. let me write the show. or let me be the next timelord…oh sorry im a woman…um, so???? well this is a historic show an needs to continue regardless. all they need is the drama, the humor and the cutting edge stories. and maybe a trip away from cardiff and more space/planet events too.

Just been reading through these comments, and I must say I’ve been having a jolly good laugh at most of them. While some comments bear some degree of intelligence, some are just plain stupid/laughable/ignorant.

“Has anyone else noticed that both Doctor who and Torchwood seem to be changing their target audience. I have many things to say about this comment:

1) Doctor Who is NOT turning into a show for younger kids. Give me evidence as to why you think that is. It is still very much a family show.

2) Since when did “suitable for young kids” make a show ‘kiddy’? Torchwood season one was far too gory and sexual to class itself as a Doctor Who spin-off in my opinion. Season two was superior to season one as it had much more actual emotion and depth rather than the “sex! sex! blood! guns! sex!” that was all too prominent in the first series.

3) I can say that John Borrowman will still feature as the lead role in season 3.

4) I’ll tell you why they keep changing everything, because tv shows change. It’s what production teams do to keep it fresh. And personally, I’ve seen no change for the worse in either Doctor Who or Torchwood.

I have it on good authority that freema will definitely be in the third season of torchwood, which was originally due to be aired in March as usual. However, producers decided to hold off filming so that Freema could also take part in LAW AND ORDER:UK. It was very good of the producers of Torchwood to allow this and extremely unusual given the rival tv stations status to the BBC.

Personally, i think postponing filming and airing is very inconvenient considering we’ve had to wait 18 months to view season 3 on the BBC. also a little thoughtless that it’s only five eps long. GIVE US MORE MORE MORE…

February 24, 2009 at 3:19 am
(51) STEVIE says:

OH YEAH… as for LAW AND ORDER:UK (not london) aired it’s first episode last night on ITV1. Dick Wolf is a genius, the way he had to re-write to accomodate for the difference in the British legal system was ingenius. Season one of TW is still my fav, one of my favorites was “They Keep Killing Susie”. I thought second season was a bit slow, but really picked up toward the end. I want Owen and Tos back. Don’t put Captain Jack in the background, he’s what makes the show tick.

Owen was my favorite character, and I was hoping he’d find his way back to humanity (and not just physically) in this new season. His flashback episode showed him once to be compassionate and loving, and explained how he came to be the embittered and angry man we knew in the series. If they had resolved the character it would be better, but when a series kills a richly drawn character like this one without resolving them, it makes me wary of investing in future characters. I’ll still watch, but his absence diminishes my anticipation by at least half.

(56) DaWomby says:

Of course the show will be different without Owen and Tos, so what. Different is good, and Torchwood is good at different.

Am I disappointed it’s only 5 episodes, well yes, but I can live with it. I’m not cutting my nose off to spite my face due to the changes.

Dr Who has had 10 (soon 11) main leads, over 40 main supporting characters. Change is good.

Leave them dead, get on with life.

PS: remember it’s not real, it’s only TV; good TV, but still TV

I agree Dawomby, Torchwood is different and that makes it good.

I am also slightly annoyed at the episode number, but for the 1 story to be set around 5 episodes should make it interesting at least.

Leaving characters dead is good, having them revive just to cater to fans annoys me (except for the doctor himself)

(58) Rachel says:

I know this is an old article but this following interview with Burn Gorman who plays Dr Owen Harper has suggested that he is likely to return for season 3 of Torchwood. At the bottom of the interview Burn says that he will be filming seasons 3 of torchwood in the future. Of course, things change but I thought it was interesting to add to the rumors of his return.

http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=147498

Fingers crossed he returns, Owen was a great character and Burn is a fantastic actor. I think there is so much more we could get from Owen. My theory is that the bright light at his death scene was a rift and he was snatched, now we know the rift can take people. Nevertheless, can’t wait for season 3! Unfortunate it’s so short but that means that all 5 episodes should be fantastic!

Maybe they don’t make it with a view to the American Audience? Maybe the American Audience is just not their priority! Maybe it’s a BBC (the clue’s in the name) programme for a British Audience – just a thought…

You cant leave out the fact that Owen was basically undead. Also that they used the vortex manipulator inside of torchwood as of which we have seen things “reset” as it were so we really cant rule out tosh or owen making at least a few walk on spots if not a full return however I do think it better they stay dead. Makes Jack darker and possibly lead to more walk ons from diffrent people like captin John. You really cannot predict anything with this show since it deals with space time and what not. They could pull rabits out their bum and call it magic and we would love ever second so no more rumors.

(66) sarah says:

why don’t everyone just be patient and wait for the series to start

i like the fact they are leaving it later and later to air it, its just keeps the tension and suspense brewing, and so what if its only five episodes big deal, get over it, its only a television show,

so what if there are cast changes-change is good u need to keep it fresh otherwise they would just keep going over the same storylines, i-e tosh and owens love story i mea c’mon owen a dead man walking n thats all his going to be, because he cant fight or anything because he cant recouperate due to being dead, so get over it, as long as they keep a few main characters it doesnt matter, give the writers a break, actors move on and do different things, owen has moved on to play bill sykes in the west version of oliver, and toshiko has moved on to do other theatrical work, dont blame it all on the writers because its not their fault they just work with what they are given, and the actors are just trying to have a career,

its called television

Sorry, are you suggesting that American audiences aren’t the final frontier for all television worldwide? How dare you suggest that a British TV show’s priority would actually be a British audience?! *sarcasm*

(68) Blake says:

In regards to what sarah (66) said, yes, Burn and Naoko have gone on to do other things in their career, but they didn’t leave Torchwood to do them – the writers decided to kill them off – they didn’t want to go.

As for the whole 5 episode thing, I think what a lot of people don’t realise is that it’s not that the BBC are cutting it down due to ratings – they are very happy with the ratings – that’s why it’s being moved to BBC 1. The reason it’s being changed to a 5 episode story arc is just because they wanted to try something new to see if it can improve the show, which may or may not work.

I am new to Torchwood and I am enjoying it. I have a question: Recently I watched an episode in which the Asian lady (still working on the character’s names) reluctantly helped a WWI soldier return to his time period-for the sake of the future. At the end of the episode, as the Asian lady is walking away, there is a song being sung by a lady, which had a very sad melody. I was sure I had heard it before. Can someone tell me the name of the song and the artist who sung it? Thanks!

On day 5 of torchwood in the UK, I give the BBC their due, it has been a master stroke the Country is stopping at 9pm on mass to watch. Not going to spoil anything for those who have not seen it yet, possibly the best thing on tv for years. To our friends over the pond, dont let them cut the content, I can see just what they would cut and that would be a crime, and watching it on 5 night really really works with the concept, so I would just buy the uncut dvd, if the content is too much for US

I have watched Torchwood from the beginning. I watched their 5 night mini-series and yes, it looks grim. However Torchwood is HOT. Why would they cancel it at this time.
I will miss the three cast members that are gone. They were so great, but Clare’s character was right, “Captain Jack, can’t just keep running away.” He will return to all of us, and I will be there to watch!

July 25, 2009 at 4:31 pm
(84) Tim says:

If you watched some of the behind the scenes featurettes, it seemed to indicate that some of the new characters presented to us in the miniseries would become the new Torchwood (Bridgette, Habiba, & the crotchety old tech guy). I want to say it was RTD himself that may have said it. If not it was one of the other core characters. So maybe it’s not ending.

Been a fan of Torchwood from the beginning. The writers keep killing off people willy-nilly, and that’s not so good for a loyal fan base. Of course, Torchwood is not supposed to be predictable, but too far the other way is just as bad. Even Buck Rogers had his loyal minions episode after episode. We love to love you baby!

(91) Karen says:

I will be very disappointed if they tone down the show to make it a “kid friendly” show. It will ruin it – it was clearly never meant to be for kids! I’m hoping for a Season 4 – there are so many good storylines they could still write!!!
