Sci Fi Likely to Pass on Moonlight
Wednesday June 4, 2008
Bad news for those passionate Moonlight fans, who've been working hard to get the canceled CBS vampire drama picked up by another network: My high-ranking source at Sci Fi tells me the network probably won't be interested.
Despite the hopes kindled by executive producer Harry Werksman at last month's MoonlightCon in Los Angeles, who said "talks" were in progress to find a home for Moonlight which apparently included Sci Fi (which would move the show to New York if it picked it up), Sci Fi is concentrating on original programming and is likely to pass.
Meanwhile fan organizers are scheduling nationwide rallies in support of Moonlight, including one in New York City's Central Park, for June 14. Rallies and rallyers are being coordinated at the Moonlightline forum.

Thanks for the news. I hope you won’t take it amiss if I distrust your source. Partially because the campaign’s high ranking sources have said not only is Sci-Fi interested, they are VERY interested. And in my opinion, ‘Moonlight’ would be a great fit. Sci-Fi has been trying to attract more female viewers by using Earth based dramas with complex characters, romance and elements of the supernatural - all of which Moonlight has. It is a wonderful original program that would fit Sci-Fi’s needs admirably.
We aren’t going to give up. Especially not with unnamed sources. But thanks for keeping ‘Moonlight’ in the headlines.
Hey there, thanks so much for giving us such great press, even if your sources are not encouraging, but you should know that we are not discouraged easily, love our show, and will go to the ends of the earth to bring it back. You are doing so much to help us just by giving it publicity and sharing the contact information. Thanks again you are a prince….
I am not a Sci Fi fan. I dont’ watch anything on Sci Fi now. I watch Moonlight for the love story, the crime/mystery, not the vampire aspect. Sci Fi could pick up a lot of viewers like me by adding Moonlight to their line up.
Just wondering, what reasons did your high-ranking source give for *why* Moonlight probably wouldn’t get picked up by the SciFi Channel?
I remember when the SciFi Channel *used* to be awesome (mid/late ’90s). They were showing stuff like (the fourth Doctor) Doctor Who episodes, Dark Shadows, anime (before it was popularized), and all sorts of other awesome cultish stuff.
When I heard the news that they were *very* interested in picking up Moonlight, I thought that they were trying to get back to their awesome roots
If your source is right, then I guess they’re not.
Mark~
Thanks as always for updated news re: Moonlight. However, I have to say I’m devastated by the idea of SciFi passing on this great show. SciFi continues to work on attracting new viewers, specifically new FEMALE viewers, and Moonlight will deliver on that goal in spades.
As for the original programming on SciFi - yes, that’s definitely a source of pride for them. But I don’t understand why Moonlight couldn’t fall into that category - with SciFi at the header instead of “the network that shall not be named”, Moonlight would be able (at last!) to have freedom to delve much more deeply into the vampire genre. And I say it would be all the stronger for it.
In short, thanks for the news…even if it wasn’t happy! And please keep updating as more info comes your way!
PS - Thanks for posting on the rallies!
Thank you for the information. We will keep fighting. I think you are telling us to do that. You never know. If we stop fighting we certainly won’t get the outcome we want. I appreciate your posting the rally info.
I didn’t too much think SciFi would pick up a quality tv series like Moonlight. After all, it usually airs truly atrocious ‘monster’ flicks for its ‘original’ programming. Those flicks are so badly acted, poorly written, and the premise not only far fetched but laughable to the extreme they can get away with hiring has-been B list actors and hack writers who wouldn’t know quality if it bit them.
Nope, award-winning acting by a class act talent like Alex O’Loughlin would really skew the grading system at SciFi. They can’t afford him. The last really good thing that channel had was Farscape and see what happened there?
NO NO this is not fair we have worked so hard to get this show in a network. this is not fair.
That’s disappointing news! I thought the series was a lot of fun. Oh well, I sent in my postcard anyway.
I don’t currently subscribe to any cable, directTV, etc. But wherever Moonlight goes I will follow. Come on Networks don’t you want the business of an already established fan base? One that easily raised enough for full page ads and over $6000 for charity at it’s first con? One that continually is loyal to the show regardless of air time and place?
Thanks Mark for the update even if its not what we want hear, at least you did follow through and made enquiries on our behalf. STILL MUST FIGHT ON FROM AN AUSSIE FAN.
Ok FANS do you really want to rally? I am boycotting CBS since the last episode and told them that in a feedback. I know I am only one small voice in the wilderness, but if others did the same, the vibrations would be felt. Of course it means missing a lot of other CBS shows. I guess it depends on how much Moonlight means to you.
I appreciate your article. It is pretty amazing that “Moonlight” has such a devoted fan base made up of people, like me, that have never felt this passionate about a tv series. For the first time in my life, I am actively campaigning to save a show, and it’s worth my time, effort, and money. “Moonlight” is just too special to let die.
This is very sad as I’m fan of Jason Dohring since Veronica Mars. I was happy to see join the cast of Moonlighting… Now this news. Very sad. Hope to learn more when I see him in July at an event he’s doing here in Toronto called Polaris (More information on polaris here if anyone is interested www.tcon.ca/polaris ).
Correct me if I am wrong…but Stargate was not an original series from Sci-Fi network. Didn’t it start on Showtime and the idiots there decided they didn’t want it anymore ? Thank goodness Sci-Fi decided to pick that up and we had 10 great years of that. We also got Stargate Atlantis due to that. Sci-Fi channel would be picking up a great series in Moonlight. Look at the huge following it has.
I sincerely hope your “sources” are wrong. It would be ridiculous for SciFi to pass on Moonlight so early in the game. The talk about developing new original series always comes with risk and TBH, alot of stuff on SciFi leaves one scratching ones head. Don’t get me wrong, I love the network, mostly for the reruns though…Moonlight already HAS a devoted fanbase. What more can you ask for!?
Sad news that Sci fi channel isnt picking up moonlight. Thought they would have realized that Moonlight deserves a second season, it has so many fans worldwide. Hope someone sees sense and gives this great show a new home. From one of the many fans in UK keep fighting.
That’s really a bummer if true. Does the show have any other prospects?
To the poster who mentioned how Sci Fi used to show more cultish programming in the 90s: I think that was before NBC and/or its parent company bought Sci Fi Channel. Once under new management, the focus shifted toward original series and movies. I was in Roswell, NM a couple of years ago for the UFO festival, and those who were involved with the first archaeological dig on the area said that Sci Fi channel was sponsoring it, and there was concern that the second scheduled dig wasn’t going to happen because of the new owners and the changed programming philosophy.
Hi, I am a total fan of Moonlight, everyone is my favorite character, it would be great if the Scifi channel will pick it up because it will go far like Stargate and Lost. Also people love Moonlight, they make fanfictions, music videos and emails about how they love it. Even as I’m writing this I am crying because of how you might pass on it, you have to it will make you lots of money.
SciFi is reairing Moonlight! Friday nights starting January 23rd at 9/8c. Make sure everyone knows! Also, now that Moonlight is paving the way, lets convince Scifi to do a vampire night and bring back shows such as Blood Ties, Kidred, Forever Knight.
Hey,
So yea…forgive me if I dont trust your source but I wont give up on my show, there are alot of fans fighting for the show and as many said sci fi WILL gain many more fans by adding this show, we are not giving up and we will keep fighting!
-shout out to all the moonlight fans! FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!!!
Love Moonlight, wish Sci-f channel would start a new series with same stars… this is a really good show
