Moonlight Fans Look to Sci Fi

Die-hard fans of CBS's canceled vampire detective drama, Moonlight, are turning their attention to the Sci Fi Channel, which may be considering the possibility of thinking about maybe picking up the show. Or not.

Pondering the future of canceled but popular shows is like reading invisible tea leaves, because discussions are always tentative and firm commitments rarely materialize. What we do know is that Harry Werksman, who is one of the show's writers and executive producers (and a veteran of Farscape and Earth: Final Conflict, among others), told Moonlight fans recently that "talks" are under way for season 2, and that if the show were picked up by Sci Fi its hero, Mick St. John (Alex O'Loughlin), would likely be transplanted to New York City, where Sci Fi is headquartered. (Mick has talked about vampires having to move on because of their longevity, though he seems to really like L.A.)

Again, nothing is even close to agreed yet. Fans are reaching out to other networks as well, though TV Guide's Michael Ausiello has proclaimed that Moonlight on The CW "ain't happening" (true that: they've got more fantasy shows than they want already). A push to get DirecTV to sponsor Moonlight, which has a precedent with Friday Night Lights, is also under way.

Werksman also stated the obvious, which is that there can be no Moonlight without O'Loughlin. Hidden in that statement is a reminder that rest of the cast – which was replaced once already en bloc at the pilot stage – is probably expendable. Would Moonlight fans be willing to sacrifice the brassy Beth (Sophia Myles) to keep their Mick fix? Smart money says yes. But the chemistry was developing nicely between Beth and Mick in the bottom half of season 1, so producers will most likely try to keep that dynamic if Myles stays available. Beth needs to move on from Buzzwire anyway, so a move to New York will be good for her character as well.

Werksman also said that the season 1 DVD, including some commentary tracks from O'Loughlin, is scheduled for September. Meanwhile, if a TV deal falls through they'll start thinking about shopping a Moonlight movie, with the high level of fan support a strong selling point.

Fans looking to convince Sci Fi to pick up Moonlight have a number of options, including sending a "perpetually cool" postcard (pdf) to the network's headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York 10112. You can email them too and let them know you'll follow the show to Sci Fi.

Hi Mark,

The fans of Moonlight are putting up a hard fight to be sure. Many of us are professionals with busy lives, but all of us take time out of those schedules to watch Moonlight. We really want to see it back and hopefully with the cast we have come to love. Alex, Sophia, and Jason are the best!

Thanks, Mark, for telling everyone about our efforts to save Moonlight. So much negative press in recent weeks has made our job all that much harder, but getting the word out that the WB and Silver Pictures are shopping our show is a good thing. We also are hoping he DirecTV angle is something that is given serious consideration if money is, in fact, an issue. This show is worth saving. Eight million people can’t be wrong. Up until hours before the upfronts, no one had any reason to believe that the show would not be picked up for a 2nd season. The buzz was good. CBS’s loss can be someone else’s gain. We the fans of Moonlight will follow our show anywhere. Along with us comes our disposable income. Nothing to sneeze at. Thanks again for helping us spread the word. Vampire Solidarity, rah, rah, rah!

Thanks for the article! It is nice to have our efforts recognized. Moonlight is a fantastic show that had there not been the combination of lack of promotion, the writer’s strike and the network trying to make it something it was never meant to be, this show really could have been a hit. Hopefully SciFi or another network will see the potential and give it (and the fans) a new home.

Thanks again for bringing attention to the situation and our efforts.

Hi Mark, Thanks for putting the word out about our efforts to save OUR show. The fans of Moonlight are spread all over the world,I myself am from Scotland, and we are all united in this effort to find a new home for Moonlight. This show has over 8 million fans, if it’s global fans are taken into account, and it deserves another season when there is so much more of the characters story to tell. One season just wasn’t enough. It’s like someone giving you a book with only the first chapter in it. So here’s a big virtual vampire hug from across the pond to you. Thanks again Mark.

The fans are really trying very hard for this pick,And we want all of our beloved cast back,Alex Sophia And Jason are Moonlight,Sorry as hard as we fight we fight for all our cast.

(6) Allegrita says:

Mark, thanks so much for passing on the word about negotiations for a second season (and beyond) for Moonlight. I was at the MoonlightCon last weekend, and it was truly heartwarming to meet so many other fans of the show–fandom is a new experience for me, as it is for many Moonlight fans! We also had a chance to do a lot of good for the world–our blood drive netted 50 pints, plus we registered 37 new people for the Bone Marrow Donor database; and we raised approximately $6500 (=3393 pounds of food!) for the Los Angeles Food Bank. I’m very proud of the power of Moonlight fans to make a difference in this world…and I’m very hopeful that our efforts for the show will not be in vain. Thanks again for the positive mention.

Mark,

Thanks for the great article, Moonlight is a great show and needs to be continued. There are fans far and wide in this world who love Moonlight. CBS made a big big mistake, please Sci Fi/DirecTv give us a chance you won’t be sorry.

Thank you so much for letting everyone know that Moonlight is out there knocking on the door with a second season full of untapped goodies and 8 million viewers to share it with them.

(9) Lynn says:

Hi Mark: Thank you so much for the thorough article about saving Moonlight. There is so much more story to be told in the Moonlight universe! The actors, Alex, Sophia and Jason, are what make the show with their complex feelings and the show’s writers are the best on TV.

Almost everyone I have had watch Moonlight comes away enthralled. With a little promotion and a new home on SciFi, Moonlight will become a success story.

(10) Susanna says:

Thanks so much for the article. Moonlight is such a great show and I think deserves to be picked up by another network. The fan base is very loyal and I think would continue to grow if the show continued. Anyway really liked the article – thank you.

(11) Lisa Tarvin says:

Thanks for the update. I would be in heaven if Moonlight were to go to the SciFi channel. It’s my favorite channel especially on Friday nites. I would watch it after Moonlight on CBS. Well now I don’t watch CBS so it would be a perfect solution for me and my family.

(12) Jen McCarty says:

Mark-

Thanks for such a positive article on the efforts to find Moonlight a new home. I’ve seen firsthand how hard the fans are working to get our show back on the air and give it a much-deserved second season.

Moonlight fans have literally given their blood, sweat and tears to save our show and our beloved vamps. They’re devoted and they (and their disposal income) will follow the show anywhere it lands.

(13) mary says:

Thank you for the article. Moonlight is a great show and I am sure that any network who picks up the show will have 8 million plus fans devoted to their network.

(14) Isabel says:

Thanks for the article! I do hope that SciFi sees what a great addition Moonlight would be to their network. It’s an intelligent and entertaining program that deserves a second season. I also hope that SciFi will see the value of keeping not only Alex O’Loughlin but also the rest of the cast, Sophia Myles, Jason Dohring and Shannyn Sossamon.

Mark:
Thanks for your article spotlighting the fans efforts. As you know, Moonlight fans are truly dedicated to saving this great show with this fabulous cast. The chemistry on that show is incredible across all of the major characters. Moonlight would make a tremendous addition to the Sci-Fi lineup and we all hope that someone recognizes that the 8 million fans will go with the show! Including to NYC!!!

(16) jords says:

Thanks for the great article! As a devoted Moonlight fan it’s great to see that the efforts of the fans and the show’s producers aren’t going unnoticed. (Except possibly by the Eye Network!)

I am extremely hopeful that Sci-Fi/NBC universal will recognize the enormous potential of this show and run with it. The fantasy/Sci-Fi genre is definitely a cult-market but with some support it pays back huge dividends. One need look only as far as the Twilight series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel, Anita Blake, etc to see that this is definitely a lucrative market.

Moonlight helped CBS by winning its timeslot week after week, and helped ensure that they owned Friday night. The show’s 8 million (Nielson estimate) fans will follow this show to any network that gives it a chance. Please Sci-Fi – make our dreams come true!

June 1, 2008 at 11:48 am
(17) pinkiepie230 says:

Any network that picks up Moonlight will not regret it one little bit. For whatever antiquated system that the major networks use to base their viewer numbers they obviously missed the mark on this one. Moonlight is a worldwide phenomenon and Alex O’Loughlin has reached icon status in the hearts of millions of fans. This show and the character of Mick St. John with his supporting cast of Beth and Josef are incomparable with any team since Star Trek in the 60’s. The revival of Moonlight will be the nightmare loss of the old and stodgy CBS exec’s and will become some newer and more innovative network’s crowning glory.
Thank you for pointing out the many ways that fans of this wonderful show can help to bring it back to the airwaves. Our beloved Moonlight deserves to be back on the air, near and dear to our hearts.
Long live Moonlight.

(18) Staci says:

Thank you, Mark, for the article and the helpful links you provided to contact Sci Fi Network.

The high quality of Moonlight and its actors attracted a loyal fanbase of 8 million viewers. Hopefully a visionary network such as Sci Fi and/or satellite provider like DirecTV will recognize the potential for this extraordinary show to build an even bigger audience.

This isn’t about squeeing fan girls – at my age I haven’t “squeeed” in some years….we’re mature, educated people who are tired of having inane reality TV crammed down our throats, and we are willing to fight to keep really good drama on TV.

I caught this show on a fluke and was instantly hooked! Even my MIL, who watches maybe 3 shows a week, caught the fever! She and I are both shocked that CBS would cancel such a great show! I really hope someone picks this up – and as a loyal DirecTV customer, I would love to tell others they can see Moonlight first on DirecTV!!

June 1, 2008 at 11:57 am
(22) Heather says:

I want to thank you for helping spread the word of our fight, and it is just that, an army has risen. The fans of Moonlight are taking this very seriously and we will not rest until we find a new “home channel” for our vamps. MOONLIGHT won the People’s Choice Award for a reason, the people love it and want more. Any network should recognize that, we hope that everyone is listening now. There’s alot of us (about 8 million), and we will follow our show wherever it goes and our money goes with us. Thank you agian Mark!

June 1, 2008 at 12:14 pm
(23) Laurinda says:

Thank you Mark for letting our voices be heard. Moonlight deserves a season 2 and more. There’s so much still to explain and the characters aren’t done with their story. Once I watched the first episode I was hooked. Moonlight fans are a dedicated group and we’re determined.

Mark,

Thank you so much for your article re MOONLIGHT. I am also a professional woman, with expendable income, age 50+ (a woman never tells!) and enthralled with this awesome, intoxicating piece of television that is MOONLIGHT. Yes, the fans will follow MOONLIGHT and Alex, Sophia, Jason, anywhere, we don’t care if to NY or whereever, we will tune in, download, watch and rewatch… we are that hooked! Thanks again for your positive article. Vampire solidarity Rah Rah Rah!!!!

IMO we want Moonlight back BUT with the same cast that has been there in the last 16 episodes. It would not be the same Moonlight without them.

June 1, 2008 at 12:44 pm
(26) Kathryn says:

Thank you for the positive article. Many try to paint Moonlight fans as “rabid” or “crazy”, but most I’ve met are responsible professionals with a passion to keep one of the few quality shows on TV alive. I,and many others, are tired of networks catering to lowest common denominator trash. This time we’re not taking it silently. Moonlight touched a deep emotional chord in over 8 million viewers and it was taken away long before its story was finished. As someone else mentioned, we are an army determined to continue as long as we have to to find a new home for our Moonlight.

June 1, 2008 at 12:45 pm
(27) Ann says:

Great show, although the last few episodes were “off” due to an ill conceived change in direction.

One thing is certain…Alex O’Loughlin IS the show, the rest are expendable, but would be a loss. Yes, true Moonlight fans would be willing to sacrifice the brassy Beth to keep their Mick fix. Anyone who would say they’d forego having any Moonlight if it doesn’t include Beth or Myles is probably a diehard soap watcher. I disagree about the chemistry between Beth and Mick though. Once the show returned from strike, whatever chemistry there had been became nearly obsolete.

Thanks for your article!

Thank you so much for writing about Moonlight. I have never been as hooked as a show as I have about this one. I even took off a few days from work and flew out from the East Coast to attend the Moonlight event at the Paley Center in Beverly Hills. I wasn’t the only one who travelled a long distance. We have done all types of charitable work in support our our show. I don’t think CBS has been fair with us and I hope another network realizes that we have the money, we have the members, and we will reward them and their advertisers for giving Moonlight a second season.

June 1, 2008 at 1:22 pm
(31) Jen S. says:

I’m so glad to see your discussion of our efforts to save Moonlight! Despite CBS’ handling of the show, Moonlight fans are exactly the sort of fans every show would like to have- and I can tell you that many would follow Moonlight to SciFi if the deal materializes.

Really appreciate your article Mark. Thank you so much for drawing attention to our Wondderful show, Moonlight. We are making great efforts to secure a season 2 (and more) and are exploring all avenues to ensure this happens. The show is unbeatable for romance, intrigue and action and I along with the other millions of Moonlight fans will follow the show to whichever network is wise enough to take it over, offering our support in every way.

Hi Mark
Thank you so much for the positive article the fans really needed it. I am a 32 year old female in the “coveted” demographic and I know for a fact that if another network picks up Moonlight then I am right behind them! The cast has the best chemistry that I’ve seen in a long time and the characters of Mick (Alex), Beth(Sophia) and Josef (Jason) have struck a real emotional cord with millions of fans and the show just wouldn’t work with any of these three performers gone.

(35) Rueben! aka Lee Ann says:

Thank you So much for writing this article, highlighting the efforts by the fans of Moonlight to save the show and by being fair and judicious to our cause. There has been negative talk in the last couple of weeks about Moonlight and the fans’ efforts to save it so it is always rewarding to read articles, such as yours, that don’t degrade the fans down to the level of crazy people trying to save a lost cause. The worldwide fans want to believe that the SFC and DirecTV will consider our requests of partnering – as DirecTV and NBC have done to save Friday Night Lights – and give Moonlight the second chance it deserves. Thank you again for the positive coverage.

they keep you coming back for more. Not since Beauty & The Beast has a show been
done so well. It has a begging, and has so many story lines to branch off from to keep it going. People’s Choice Award,
Emmy nominee, won it’s time slot each week and keep it’s ratings, what more could you ask for a New Show, given time, this show will prove itself, some
one out there has to say ” Okay, let’s give the fans a chance, we’ll give them

Thanks for the article! It’s good to have positive press and let people know the show’s been cancelled, since CBS is trying to trick everyone who doesn’t go online. The fanbase for this show is through the roof and indeed, international.

Thanks, Mark, for your positive report on our continued efforts to save Moonlight. We are not a bunch of crazy teenagers who have nothing better to do than drool over a TV show. Many of us are professionals with families who share a common interest – saving one of the few imaginative & well-written shows on TV! A quality series such as Moonlight is such a rarity that it causes us to cry out LOUDLY when it is taken from us. We are passionate & we are loyal. We have already given our time, money & even our blood to show how willing we are to follow this series to a new home!

We are tired of the trash that networks are showing in their greedy attempts to line their pockets. We’ve chosen to take a stand to support an excellent program & we’re eager to back any company (whether it be SciFi or anyone else) & advertisers who can recognize the worth of Moonlight. We understand that a profit must be made, but we have a say in where we spend our disposable income. And we say we want to spend it on a show like Moonlight! Please pick up Moonlight & take our money!!

(48) Monica says:

Thanks for putting the word out on Moonlight. It sad that CBS had to mess them up at the last minute by deciding to cancel them after everything looked like it would be renewed. But i’m not worried for Moonlight, I believe it will be back because that’s how good I think the show is. It has a great cast, a strong fanbase of 8 millions and more since not everyone is part of that nielsen family and there are so many stories left to tell and to explore. Anyone taking on this show will definitely have a major success on their hands. Its CBS lost for turning their back on the show and i’m sure they know by now they made a mistake by letting it go. That is why fans are working hard to put it back on a new network, were serious about supporting it wherever it goes.

Because, NO MATTER the outcome, we are more informed viewers. We are now aware of the extra efforts needed to insure a program we like stays on air. No longer can we be complacent…Sitting idly bye, while those in the SUITS decide what we will watch!!!

Thanks for the article. We need all the publicity we can get to convince folks that we are truly serious about this show. We wouldn’t be if it didn’t have great actors, great writing, and great production. It seems everyone has under estimated both fans and the program from the beginning. Personally, I don’t want to give up Sophia or Jason and I don’t think Alex would want that either. The Mick/Beth chemistry is so strong and the show is about love not some brooding vampire running around NY. The bond between Josef and Mick is equally strong in that Butch/Sundance buddyship way. These relationships are what has made this show tick. Destroy that, destroy the show. IMHO.

Hi Mark,

Thank you for noticing this devoted band of fans. I am in a household of three in the demo they seek. We all love Moonlight for different reasons. Moonlight was a show that you could watch with your teenager and enjoy together.

We are all in this together, and we will win. With this gem of a show losing this battle is not an option. The army is ready to go to great lengths to save Moonlight. Also, there is no Moonlight without Beth. Moonlight is first and foremost a love story which is what brought me in in the first place. I am still confident that if we put our hearts, souls, and money into this, we will be able to see more of our favorite characters! There aren’t many shows worth watching on TV anymore, but Moonlight is one of them.

Thanks so much for your positive commentary. The Moonlight fanbase demographics are an advertisers dream…largely employed adults, aged 25-54. In other words, we’re willing to put our money where our mouths are and will follow Moonlight to whatever network is smart enough to pick it up!

(57) Carol says:

Hi Mark, My thanks, along with the other Moonlight fans, for this article. And, thanks for recognizing that the fan base is serious about getting this show picked up by a network other than CBS. That network obviously had a brain implosion when the decision was made to cancel this show. The list of reasons for keeping the show or picking it up is long. The list of reasons for canceling it is pretty short – something about CBS wanting more viewers in the 18-49 demographic, even though the show won this demo in the last four episodes, as well as winning the time slot in total viewers. CBS then promised reruns on the next two Friday nights, but canceled both and instead, ran reruns of Ghost Whisperer (which lost the 9:00 p.m. time slot to NBC’s Dateline on May 23) and Numb3rs on May 30. I do not know if that show won the time slot or not, but it is pretty obvious that CBS was more afraid of winning the 9:00 time slot with Moonlight than losing it to another network without Moonlight. Winning with Moonlight would have proven that CBS had made a gross mistake by canceling the show.

As for the show needing the current actors to be successful, I think it does, although I do agree with one of the posters that the ‘chemistry’ between Mick and Beth was certainly off in the last three episodes. It was there in episode 13 but fizzled in 14 and almost died in 15, making the chemistry harder to rekindle in the 16th episode. That, of course, was not the fault of the actors, but of the writers. They did the show a disservice in episodes 14 and 15. Personally, I thought episode 15 was probably the worst in all of the 16, including the first two. Perhaps my expectations were a little high, but I have to say that devoting 10 minutes to swat teams and underground searches is something we get to see any night we turn on our televisions. Less than 2 minutes was devoted to the Mick-Beth relationship in that episode. I’m not a fan of soap operas, but this is a love story, first, then, it is a vampire story. I also think that Jason Dohring’s character is crucial to the story. Jason is a brilliant actor and brings Josef to life. If you visit any of the fan sites, you will find that many (maybe most) of the slogans used by the fans are those first spoken by Josef. That, of course, is also the writers’ doing. Even in the weaker episodes, Josef has had great lines and Jason Dohring does a super job of bringing it off.

I also wanted to point out that Moonlight has spurred the sale of DVD’s of other movies that Alex and Beth have been in and I purchased the 3 seasons of Veronica Mars for one reason – I wanted to see Jason Dohring. He did just as good a job in it as he has done in Moonlight.

By the way, the first link you have posted for the Moonlight web sites is down. That is why you cannot get to the site. The second link explains why it is down – the building housing the company that hosted the domain for the website apparently exploded – literally.

Thanks, Mark for keeping Moonlight in the limelight. We are 8 million fans strong and are fighting for our show with everything we have. We have organized blood drives, have placed ads in two trade papers (Variety and The Hollywood Reporter) and are in the process of putting up a billboard or two. We have plenty of disposable income and by and large are in the desired demographic (18-49). We have pledged to follow our show to whichever network picks it up and to support its advertisers. Again, thanks for your article.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the positive article on Moonlight and all of the Moonlight Fans. Like my fellow fans I believe that we will see Moonlight again. I think it’s only a question of what network and when. I want to give a big Cheer to the fans that fight to save their shows. This one in particular. Since all the talk about ratings and fans started, I have come to understand how flawed the system for determining actual viewership is. Thanks fans, for drawing attention to the system.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for helping to keep the spotlight on Moonlight. I hope your article helps more people become aware of our efforts to keep Moonlight on TV. As others have said, keeping the whole cast together is very important to us. To me, the goal of our efforts is to maintain Moonlight’s integrity in addition to finding a new home for it. Having Moonlight on SciFi would be excellent for those of us who are already avid viewers of their programming. Learning the dirty workings of the ratings game has taught us that we have to do more to make ourselves heard and respected. Gone are the days of blindly eating what networks threw at us. We demand intelligent, thought-provoking programming. And Moonlight has consistently delivered. Thanks again!!

Thank you for giving Moonlight some attention, and also shining the spot light on the faithful, yet sane and logical, fans that are trying to help Moonlight catch its second breath!!! We beleive in the show, and hope that someone on another network also beleives in the show. It repeatedly helped CBS earn great rating each Friday, only slipping slightly in ratings a couple of times. This is really amazing for a show that caught so much flack for being a copy cat of every other vampire show ever made. It stands on its own, and the fans have acknowledged that. Thanks again for writing about Moonlight!

Mark, yet another thank you for your fantastic article about Moonlight and the continuing campaign to bring it back to the airwaves. I too have never fought for a television show before now, never written networks or cable providers or advertisers, never felt so strongly about something as I do this beloved show. Many of its fans are still unaware of its cancellation, unaware of the fight we are waging to save it, so articles like yours go a long way to spreading the word and recruiting more supporters. Often, we are compared to the Jericho fans or Veronica Mars fans, but while we have similar goals, I think the cancellation of Moonlight has opened the eyes of the average television viewer to just how expendable shows really are, whether they deliver great entertainment or not.

Thank you for the article on Moonlight. I am a mother of 3 (15, 13, 9) Application Developer with a Master’s Degree. I have never blogged, emailed, or called for a show before Moonlight. I have watched You tube videos, got a my space account, and purchased my first television program all due to this show.

The chemistry between Alex and Sophie is electrifying, the humor brought in by Jason is refreshing. It made Friday’s and CBS a must see TV night in my home.

It won its time slot and demographics every week w/o any real advertising by the network. Many viewers weren’t even counted by the out of date rating system since they viewed the show online or via DVR on the following day.
We are a group of people with resources, we know what we like and can make intelligent decisions w/o the help of CBS execs. We have raised $6,500 for food giving to a LA shelter, over 50 pints of Blood, 37 bone marrow donors, and raised 14,000 in 72 hours for ads in Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.

We deserver to be heard and respected by CBS and other networks. We will follow Moonlight and support it with the same energy during this campaign. We just need a network out there to realize what the show’s and its viewer’s potential.

For myself and many of the fans, this is the first TV show in YEARS that I’ve cared about. It’s been over 10 years since there was a show that was a “can’t miss” for me. For the most part, I’d rather read a book than watch any TV. From the beginning Moonlight hooked me. Now I’m emotionally .. and financially invested in this show.

Thanks for your article. The fans of Moonlight are fighting for a show that is a breath of fresh air from the other shows. It brings us romance, wit, charm, and adventure each week. The story lines are limitless. The chemistry between the actors is breathing. I have never before been actively involved in trying to get another season for a cancelled show, but this show is different. It is the only show that I hear over and over on message boards that entire families watched together. It was bringing the American family back together instead of being so fragmented. We will follow the show wherever it goes. Come on someone, give the viewers of Moonlight a new home. There were 7.5 to 8.5 weekly viewers per the Neilsen ratings. Many of us were not counted. Moonlight has captured the imagination of not only its’ targeted demographic audience but has sucked in people of all ages. It has been the reason for many of us to go out and purchase computers, phones, and mp3 players, etc. People who knew nothing about the internet (like me) are going on line for the first time, visiting forums, purchasing songs and episodes, etc. It’s cancellation sure was short-sighted!

In mid-September, 2007, I heard a voice coming from my TV(being in another room) saying I’m Mick St. John, P.I. The voice was enticing and sexy so I had to go see who it was. Oh my! A devastingly handsome actor was interviewing as a vampire P.I. for this new series called Moonlight. I was hooked! As a highly educated intelligent woman I know quality when I see it. I knew that Moonlight would be quality and good from the beginning. There are viewers in 32 other countries along with the millions in the USA who obviously agree with me. Viewers include ages 14-85, both men and women. Embedded in these viewers is the desired demographic of 18-49. Those of us 50+ also spend and probably control the finances of the household. Think the advertisers and the suits have no perspective about that. After all Baby Boomers are the largest percentage group in the US. We will bring our purchasing dollars to any network smart enough to give us and our show a home.
Sophia Myles would be a loss to the show as she has made Beth her own. And Jason? Who else could be Josef? Alex O’Loughlin IS Mick St. John. He and Jason are superb! Think Robert Redford and Paul Newman. Alex and Sophia…explosive onscreen chemistry! The writers have given us a season full of thrills and always shocking us. These thrills should continue in several seasons. With decent promotion and preservation of the story direction, Moonight could become a classic. YES! Moonlight would bring great treasure to anyone who picks it up and gives it the care it deserves. The fanbase will only grow from 8M+. Moonlight is intelligent plays only to the best part of our senses, making us appreciate being human despite the awful things in the world. How can a show about love, sacrifice, brotherhood, loyalty, chivalry, tolerance and self acceptance be so bad?
Thank you, thank you, thank you for writing about our gem, giving additional exposure we so sorely need. Vampire solidarity, rah, rah, rah!

Thanks Mark for your great article. I love Moonlight and can’t believe such a well written, intelligent programme has been cancelled. Alex and Sophia are the show, whereas I’d be pleased if the location moved to New York, the show without the talented and beautiful Sophia Myles is unthinkable.

Mark, thank you for your positive attitude toward such a wonderful show. There’s a large group of TV viewers who will follow Moonlight to its new home, and 8 million additional to one’s network isn’t a bad tally!!

(131) Librarian_7 says:

Thanks for the positive article. This show has literally changed lives for the better, and saved more than a few. It completely altered my definition of being a “big fan.” I can only say that for the many, many diehard supporters of Moonlight, we will never stop fighting for “our” show…and will gladly follow it wherever it goes. The DirecTV idea is innovative and bold, and I think it’s high time that the stodgy older networks realized that the world, and the game, is changing. Long live Moonlight!

Thank you Mark for the positive article.

We are very passionate about this show, and if ever a show can be brought back, this is it. And you can tell by the positive actions of the fans, and the generosity of their spirits.

We will follow Moonlight, anywhere it goes.

Mark

Awesome article. I find it hard to believe that a network hasn’t figured out that there is such a huge fan base that Moonlight developed. The fans became loyal after only one season that was interupted. I found the show by channel surfing as it was not really advertised that much. Everyone that I’ve told to watch the show also got hooked. SciFi might be the perfect spot – who cares if in New York – fans will still watch Mick, Beth and Josef.

(135) Kathryn (addicted57) says:

Mark, I’ve spent a bit of time reading through all the comments about our beloved series Moonlight, and also wish to express my thanks on your article. The vampire genre is pretty popular, always has been, alwys will be. I caught one show on SciFi not long ago,but it was a bit bloody for my tastes, which is why I need my fix of Moonlight. I don’t fit the demographic,I’m 50+, and know quality television when I see it. Authors know a good thing also, which is one reason sales are rocketing for books such as Twilight, I’m an avid reader of J.D Robb..and Nora Roberts, who had a very nice trilogy that invovled a vamp, just went to the book store and picked up 4 more..authors Lindsay Sands,Katie McAlister..the young lady working there said she can’t keep them on the shelf..hmm..wonder why.Television has changed much in my day, and for the most part..not for the better. There is quality programming out there, and also a lot of reality garbage..every network has to have 2 or 3..all the same..it’s not leaving a positive taste in the viewers mouths. The fans of Moonlight have been fighting hard to get this show onto a network worthwhile..a network that will let it’s light shine through. It’s untimely cancellation united us all. We do count..we’re tired of the garbage they try to shove down our throats….tired of not being heard…we really are not rabid..we are however devoted. So any and all positive vibes are good.. thank you for writing about our good fight.. just because the show was cancelled does not necessarily make it harder for it to be brought back to life by another network…the viewers are there…from all over the universe. I also think Moonlight would do exceptioanlly well on SciFi..or USA..I’ve switched my viewing habits to these 2 networks exclusively and am really surprised with the programming…neither cater to stupids…which is entertaining in itself. Thanks for giving me a chance to speak my mind…and hoping the buzz will continue to be good.

I am an unlikely fan of this program, but I found myself very much caught up in the characters and genre, even though I have never been a vamp fan before. I am hopeful that some executive will see the potential of Moonlight and give us viewers back a very fun escape from everyday life and “I know what’s going to happen” programming!

Thank you for your comments on Moonlight and for not assuming that because we looked forward to a program and are sad that it has been canceled, we are not necessarily some crazy fan.

Thanks so much for your postive review on Moonlight’s fan efforts to save our show. It is much appreciated. And yes, while it’s absolutely true that I would continue watching this show on ANY network that chose it pick it up–I certainly hope that the integrity of the show, and its characters won’t have to be compromised in order to save it. Moonlight just isn’t the same without its phenomenal trilogy O’Loughlin, Myles, and Dohring. I would be very excited though to see how the change in location from LA to NY might affect the show. Thanks again for your kind review!

June 3, 2008 at 4:28 pm
(155) Maria says:

Thank you so much for this article, for bringing light to what all us Moonlight fans are doing.

I am shocked that Moonlight has been cancelled.

Never before has a show had such a following as this one. It is unbelievable.

There are masses of fans that will follow this show wherever it goes, therefore network ratings will fly through the roof for who ever picks it up. It won peoples choice awards for best new drama, is being considered for an emmy for outstanding drama series, reached the desired 18-49 demographic, it consistently helped CBS to win Friday nights and people have been donating blood in it’s name. People don’t understand why someone hasn’t picked it up, maybe because they want a new show in it’s place? I think that is a grave mistake. Because that show would have to build a fan base and gain word of mouth for people to watch it (not mention the risk they would be taking, airing a new show that people may not like) while Moonlight already has an incredibly tremendous, extremely loyal, fan base/following, a fan base/following that will easily pull in around 8 million views the least and has had word of mouth and is already so passionately adored. It has all the qualities that a show needs for everyone to enjoy and to carry on for many seasons to come, it has romance, action, comedy, drama, style, beautiful people and much more.

So lets hope someone comes to their senses and picks up Moonlight for a season two.

Thank you very much for your time, Good day.

Thank you for writing about MOONLIGHT. I’m a librarian and I know how popular all types of vampire lit are from young adult to mystery to romance. MOONLIGHT is my favorite because of the relationship among the three main characters. I love the way Beth’s character is treated with such respect by the guys. She’s presented as a real person, also. A strong, spirited woman, not overly thin and frail with a face that doesn’t look like victimized by an overzealous plastic surgeon!

I 100% agree. This TV series was classy, interesting and actually the only vampire series with believable looking vampires (well, as much as you CAN believe in vampires anyway! ;-) ).

16 episodes simply isn’t enough, and the ending is crying out for further ones to be made. Anyone got any more news on the state of play with this series?

I was more than dissapointed when I saw Moonlight was not being brought back for season 2, I even found a rope and heavy beam to tell the world just how upset I was, but I caught a commercial about it starting on Sci Fi, of course right as I was about to kick the chair out from under me (noose still attached to beam) And decided, life IS good….BUT how many new seasons will there be, or will season 1 just be repeated till 2035….everyone watch and wait, ready to kick out that chair that decides our fate (and happiness) Maybe I shouls get another job?

i just started watching moonlight on accident and then all of a sudden its cancelled. i love shows with vampires so this show was for me. after angel and buffy, there isn’t any good ones and supernatural doesn’t count because its a variety. if they decided to do another season for this i will be watching. my thing is i don’t think a show should be cancelled until they’ve had two seasons. i mean it might have been bad in the first and better in the second, it happens.
