After await of nearly a year, and only days in advance of the season 4 debut on April 4, the third season of Battlestar Galactica is now out on DVD.

As you might expect, compensation for the wait comes in the form of massive quantities of extras: the 6-disc set features "over 15 hours" of special features; the main selling point is a DVD-exclusive version of the episode "Unfinished Business" containing 25 additional minutes of previously unseen footage. The additional material consists primarily of a considerable quantity of deleted scenes; video blogs by producer David Eick; and Ronald D. Moore's podcast commentaries. Also included are "The Resistance" webisodes.

Though there were some undeniably outstanding moments, particularly during the rescue ofthe colonists from New Caprica, season 3 was somewhat controversial for BSG fans. The revelation of four of the "missing Cylons" as members of the regular cast, in particular, aroused dismay and indignation; though personally my biggest problem with season 3 was how the Kara/Sam relationship descended into the mire of melodrama. But even though season 3 wasn't as viscerally engaging as seasons 1 and 2, we'll need to see how season 4 plays out to judge season 3's overall place in the big picture.

The DVD is available from Universal Studios Home Video (to compare prices on this release, click here). Also out is a companion soundtrack CD, featuring music from season 3 by composer Bear McCreary (compare prices).

I bought it the day it was released, then, the next day was excited to hear that the Sci-Fi channel has given the go-ahead for the long rumored and talked about prequel, “Caprica.”
