Interview: Beau Bridges on Ark of Truth
Thursday March 13, 2008
Coming out this week is the first of two Stargate SG-1 direct-to-DVD feature films being released this year: Stargate: The Ark of Truth. (The second, Stargate: Continuum, will be out in July.) In Ark, the final SG-1 team (Daniel Jackson, Sam Carter, Cameron Mitchell, Teal'c, and Vala) is reunited to face the final Ori threat to Earth itself – a confrontation that's been looming since the start of season 9.
To do so, they must track down an artifact that could spell utter defeat for either side – the Ark of Truth, an ancient brainwashing device that compels belief. The dire threat to the human race and the intergalactic quest for the ark are further complicated by the possibility of treachery from within SGC's own civilian administrators. Ark of Truth takes advantage of moving beyond the restrictions of weekly series television, using higher production values and a longer format to add scope and scale to the confrontation between the obsessed Ori and Earth's unsung defenders.
The DVD itself also contains considerable special features for a one-off, including commentary with Robert C. Cooper, Christopher Judge and Peter Woeste; The Ark of Truth: Stargate at Comic-Con; Uncovering the Ark of Truth featurette; and Stargate SG-1: The Road Taken – prelude to Stargate: The Ark of Truth.
I had a chance to talk with Beau Bridges, who plays General Hank Landry, about Ark of Truth, the evolution of Stargate and his character, and lots of other things. A science fiction fan with personal and family connections to the genre, Bridges was good to talk to about experiencing fan loyalty, professional camaraderie, and what sci-fi is all about.
