The State of the Season

New Amsterdam debuts with three episodes in the space of a week, starting Tuesday, March 3.

New episodes are airing now
- Eli Stone is already in full swing: ABC is showing a full half-season of the delusional-lawyer drama/fantasy, completed before the strike, Thursdays at 10 p.m.
- Kyle XY continues its uninvolving slate of new episodes, which started in January, Mondays at 8 p.m. on ABC Family. The season finale is March 17.
- Jericho is three episodes into its much-ballyhooed phoenix season, Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on CBS (and let me say once again: watch this show!).
- Medium, NBC's forensic paranormal drama, began showing a full half-season of 13 episodes last week on Feb. 18. Airs Mondays at 10 p.m.
- Torchwood is five episodes into its exciting 13-episode second season, Saturdays at 9 p.m. on BBC America.
- Sarah Connor Chronicles, recently energized by the arrival of Brian Austin Green as Derek Reese, wraps up with a two-hour finale promising lots of twists and surprises Monday at 8 p.m. (note the earlier time) on Fox.
- Stargate Atlantis ends Friday, March 7 with Sheppard trapped on a derelict and deserted Atlantis thousands of years in the future.
- Battlestar Galactica has a full 20-episode fourth and last season on the way. After months of vagueness about when it would return, the season premiere launching the first slate of ten has been nailed down to Friday, April 4. The second half will air later in the year.
- Moonlight has four new episodes in production for this season. CBS's vampire crime drama returns Friday, April 11. Although the series has not been officially renewed, the fact that production was restarted to round out the freshman season seems promising. My guess is CBS provisionally plans to renew it but will only do so if the April episodes do well.
- New Amsterdam – okay, take a deep breath. The pilot for Fox's new immortal cop drama airs Tuesday, March 4 at 9 p.m. Then another episode airs Thursday, March 6 at 9 p.m. And then, the show settles into its regular slot on Monday, March 10 at 9 p.m. Why the Tuesday/Thursday thing – is this some sort of graduate seminar? No, the lead-in both nights is American Idol, which has a big three-episode event this week, and Fox is hoping New Amsterdam's sexy star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau will catch the wave.
- Reaper still has a couple of episodes left, which will air in April in the show's new slot Thursdays at 9 p.m. No word yet on whether The CW has renewed the series for a sophomore season, but most pundits say positive reviews and strong writing will edge out mediocre ratings.
- Smallville has five new episodes yet to air; expect to see them in April (a specific date hasn't been announced).
- Supernatural is currently off the schedule, but there are supposed to be four more episodes to air starting on April 24 (yes, that's a Thursday), even though last week's awesome "Jus in Bello" played out like a season finale. As for renewal, the show is widely expected to return. The CW, though burned by fan fury at Reaper having taken over Supernatural's time slot, is reportedly intrigued by boffo ratings resulting in part from the publicity, and a renewal of Supernatural – for my money the hands-down best sci-fi / fantasy show on broadcast TV – now seems likely.
- Doctor Who is about to broadcast its fourth season in the UK, after which it will air here on Sci Fi (look for it in June).
- Chuck has been renewed for fall and has no new episodes until then. Reruns are airing Friday nights on Sci Fi.
- Flash Gordon just finished its freshman season with the four leads stranded on Mongo. Sci Fi is toying with renewing the low-rated, much-hated show but has made no announcement; its last few episodes got a "most improved" vote from me (I went from hating the show to, well, not hating it quite so much). If it does return, Sci Fi risks angry fans (myself included) scoffing, "You killed Dresden Files and renewed this?"
- Heroes has been renewed for the fall, and the show's producers are promising extra episodes beyond the usual 22 to compensate for the shortened (and disappointing) second season. No reruns currently on the schedule (the slot is occupied by My Dad Is Better than Your Dad at the moment), but expect to see them in the weeks leading up to the season 3 debut.
- Pushing Daisies has no new episodes left of its freshman season but will be returning in the fall. No reruns are currently on the schedule (ABC is currently showing Wife Swap in that slot).
- Bionic Woman was reported canceled on Feb. 20 by TV Guide, despite the previous announcement of a new show runner. In fact the magazine gave the heavily hyped superhero reboot its award for most spectacular freshman flame-out. Fair enough.
- Journeyman is gone forever. As we reported in January, the sets were destroyed at Christmas and everyone sent home.

Comments
That is some preliminary good news for my favorite show, Supernatural. Thank you so much informing us fans!
Hey, Mark! Great to read a critic who really knows his stuff! “Supernatural” is definitely the best. Thanks to you and others like you, maybe the CW is beginning to appreciate that.
Yay for Supernatural - Mark, you rock!
I am so glad Moonlight will be back with 4 new episodes,And CBS Thank you very much for that,Although CBS does need to promote this show more, ( We the fans are doing all we can) but CBS sooooo needs to step up,If they would promote this show more Moonlight would have so much better ratings!!!
So glad CBS is giving Moonlight 4 more episodes this Spring And if CBS wants Moonlight to get better ratings for those 4 episodes they really need to promote it more
What a waste of film, just cancel it and produce something human beings can relate to.
I’m always happy to hear good news about Supernatural. Wish the CW would some reruns though!! I’m looking forward to April
You are spot on with the Supernatural comments! By far my favorite show ever and its definitely the most unique and intriguing show on TV right now. Thanks for the kind words!
I completely agree with your opinion that Supernatural is hands down the best sci/fi show on tv. I have been a passionate veiwer of that show from the beginning, and I am so happy to hear that it’s renewal is all but official at this point.
I can’t believe Journyman is never coming back!!!! I’m going to cry!
Anywho, on the bright side Supernatural is coming back in April. WOO HOO!!!!!
Thanks for the kind words about Supernatural and the very promising outook about Season 4!
I am so glad Supernatrual is coming back with 4 more episodes. It is the best show out right now! Thanks for putting in a good word about Supernatural.
Promising news about Supernatural. Its such a long time until April!! Supernatural is far and away my favorite show. I really am glad to hear that the CW is intrigued — I hope they are intrigued enough to greenlight season 4!!!
I’m also glad to hear Chuck is coming back.
So glad to hear that Supernatural is widely expected to return for a fourth season. =) It’s only Best show ever!
Thanks for your article and great comments about Supernatural. I rarely invest my time in a television show, but this one has caught hold of me and won’t let go! It’s the best show on any network, and Kripke and Co. deserve as many seasons as possible!
Supernatural is definately the best sfi-fi/fantasy show out there! Can’t wait for April 24th!
I was disappointed in Bionic Women so not surprised it’s not returning. A little sad to see Journeyman go since it was different, and I’m happy that Moonlighting has been given a chance to grow — it started out rather bland but got much better. The passion of the Jericho fans to save their show convinced me to watch, and I agree with them! But the best news of all is that Supernatural is all but guaranteed a fourth season. It truly is an excellent show! The CW’s decision to remove it entirely from the schedule will backfire and not help Reaper since most SN fans will be watching episodes online or just popping in their DVDs. The sooner CW realizes this and returns SN, the better it will be for all.
nice article mark…couldnt agree more about supernatural so thank you
supernatural rasies the bar on what i now expect out of a tv show. it crosses the boundaries between family drama and horror, and i am thankful that it is getting more recognition. thanks for the great critque!!!!
Supernatural is my favorite show! I am so happy it is coming back with more episodes this season and that season 4 looks good. I wish more people understood that the show is about more than sci-fi and horror. It’s about family.
Thanks for this article, Mark. I am thrilled at the prospect that Supernatural will more than likely have a Season 4. They so deserve it. I think it’s the best show on television… Not only is it about monsters and demons, but bottom line it’s about family and the bonds of brotherhood. Thanks for this wonderful news!
Thank you so much for your nice–and very accurate–comments about Supernatural. It’s the one show that make me laugh, cry, cheer, and hang on the edge of my seat all within a single episode. Good story lines, good writing, amazing acting…it has it all. I’m so glad the CW is starting to realize what a gem it is!
Thanks a lot for the good news about Supernatural Mark!
The show is very unique and it’s charm and intense makes it to a highlight between the currently sci-fi/fantasy shows!
Considering that they don’t have that big budget like (for example) Lost, the whole crew affords a great achievement! Starting from the awesome performance by the leading actors over the directors great work to the lovely set-creations by the decorators.
I just love this “little” show!
it’s great to hear good news about SUPERNATURAL, love the show!!!
Fantastic to see some news about the wonderful show Supernatural, i adore this show and cant wait for the next installments and hopefully another season!
Great news for SN fans!
I’m looking forward to New Amsterdam, though I’m going to stay detached so when they cancel it - which most likely will happen if it’s worth watching - I won’t be horribly disappointed.
As for Sci-Fi having angry viewers/fans if they renew Flash & not Dresden, you’re SO right! There are nearly 10,500 signatures on the Save Dresden Petition & I can just imagine how they’ll feel if that happens!
Thanks so much for the info! Sorry to see Journeyman go, I was just starting to like really like it. I hope your thoughts on *Moonlight* are correct, I am SO tired of having my favorite shows cancelled. I hope that anyone who has not had a chance to see it does try it during sweeps, it is really good and getting better each week! They have a major leading man in Alex O’Laughlin, he can act, look good and laugh at himself.. Nice to see a good looking man who doesn’t look full of himself.
Tune in and help us save our show guys! You’ll end up addicted. : )
