With only two weeks to go before the airdate of NBC's revamp of Knight Rider (the TV movie/pilot is slated for Sun., Feb. 17), the crucial role of KITT the car has been suddenly recast, according to a report in Variety.

Val Kilmer has mere days to hurriedly revoice the audio for the talking car after Will Arnett was forced out of the show – not by the network or the producers, but by General Motors.

Will Arnett's face is best known to many viewers from his starring role as Gob on Arrested Development, but his voice has what's gotten him into trouble here: his voice acting career, which has included roles in high-profile projects like Ratatouille, also involved a long stint as the voice of GMC Trucks. General Motors objected to Arnett voicing the supercar KITT in Knight Rider, causing the producers to recast the role at the last minute.

But wait – there should be no problem, because KITT is a Pontiac Trans Am, right? Not anymore. The new KITT is a Ford Mustang, and GM cited a contractual conflict of interest clause that prevents Arnett from promoting GM's competitors.

Val Kilmer, though? He's not who I think of when I run through my mental list of "great voice over artists," but at least it's an attention-getting choice. If you're trying to think of who did it in the original show, by the way, it was William Daniels (St. Elsewhere).
