There's a lot of sci-fi and fantasy out there, and a great deal of it is known only to a few fervent adherents (and/or equally fervent detractors). While I'll continue to be closely interested in the big-ticket sci-fi and fantasy purveyed by the major media, whether it be television series or big-budget feature films, the widely publicized events and latest installments in billion-dollar franchises are only part of the story.

Over the next several months I'll be making an effort to broaden my efforts to cover more of what's out there in the genre besides the high-profile mainstream. As a small part of that effort I'm inaugurating here a sporadic feature called Slightly Obscure Cinema, where I pick up lesser-known offerings that not everyone has heard of. Some of these will be minor studio efforts, like today's entry (1993's 12:01, released last year on DVD), but I also will want to include independent and amateur releases that merit a look by a larger audience.

Suggestions for Slightly Obscure Cinema – and other forms of coverage – are always welcome. Just email me, or post about something you'd like to see covered in the Suggestion Box thread in the forum.
