Fifth and Tenth Doctors Meet in Charity Special
Tuesday November 20, 2007
The BBC charity drive Children in Need has commissioned a multi-Doctor special for the second time in Doctor Who history. This time, the Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison, who was in the role for three seasons, from 1982 to 1984) meets up with the the Tenth (current Doctor David Tennant) when their TARDISes accidentally collide.
The brief (eight-minute) special is a delight, with lots of references (everything from the helmic regulator to the Mara is name-checked), in-jokes, and vast appreciation for the dashing Davison Doctor. Once heavily overshadowed by the more famous Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker, 1974-1981), Davison is now widely recognized as one of the show's most talented and beloved actors, and certain of his episodes (such as his swan song, "The Caves of Androzani") have become iconic.
This special, "Time Crash," explicitly recognizes the debt that the hyperkinetic Tennant Doctor owes to this particular predecessor, which is great fun and a most welcome gesture to Davison and his time on the show.
