Season 5 of Doctor Who Postponed Until 2010

There will be no new series of Doctor Who in 2009, the BBC announced this week, causing fresh (and still entirely groundless) talk that David Tennant might be leaving the show at or after the end of next spring's season 4.
According to an announcement on the show's official site, season 5 of the hit sci-fi institution will be delayed until 2010. Fans will not be completely deprived of Who during 2009, as three specials have been scheduled for the interim year. With the 2008 Christmas special already in train, this means that a mini-season of four specials will be aired during the 21 months separating seasons 4 and 5.
Season 4 has been in production over the summer with Tennant, Catherine Tate, and Freema Agyeman as stars, but the line-up for the specials and the postponed season 5 has not been revealed. BBC News noted that Tennant is expected to play Hamlet for the Royal Shakespeare Company next summer, which might be one cause for the delay of season 5; this would seem to argue that Tennant is staying with the program, since his conflict next summer would be irrelevant if someone else were starring in season 5. But even Tennant's RSC gig is unconfirmed.
Meanwhile, executive producer Russell T. Davies has not yet clarified whether he intends to continue his association with the program through into season 5. Davies, like Tennant, has hinted that he might leave the show at some point, but so far has not set a date.

i think its incredibly selfish to ask them to replace tennant just because he has something going on. their even giving out specials during the delay period. tennant has brought much to this series and hopefully will spread his talent. im okay with waiting a year for a new season if it means he can do so. =) cheers.
i just found out about the delay for season five and thats such a bummer. but as for Tennant leaving the show, that may be a good thing. hes been the doctor for three years running now and its about time for a change. if he remains the doctor for one more season, he may face the same problem Tom Baker (Doctor #4) faced after leaving.
WARNINGSPOILERS Kinda obvious that he was going to regen at the end of the finale, but it still is a little sad when you see it. Can’t wait for 2-10 to see who the new actor will be, and the Daleks really need to die. They’re getting really, really old, and one happens to hide in an alleyway waiting to shoot the Doctor while he and Rose are in total Baywatch mode? Pitiful. But, all in all, the show rocks, and we’ll miss you, Tennant.

If waiting until 2010 for new Doctor Who episodes means David Tennant is staying for at least one more, full season, then I’m all for fhe wait. He’ s fhe best Doctor by far!! But, with the regen/non-regen storyline being so secertive and unexpected, it makes me wonder if they are doing the unexpected again, and getting a new Doctor by the end of all the one episode specials. But I’m hoping and praying for David’s return for a full season 5 in 2010!!!
I live in Illinois and I got hooked after a friend of mine made me watch it. I didn’t think I would like it… Being a Trekkie, I knew it was nothing like it…But I loved it. I just finished the third season and I’m looking forward to watching the 4th, when I came across this story. 2010! What will I be doing in 2010? Most likely not thinking about Doctor Who because I haven’t seen it in 2 years!! I need my sci-fi! I’m still devastated that there’s no more Star Treks and X-Files to watch… So I’ll move on to my next sci-fi addiction..

I have been watching Dr. Who since the very beginning and a big fan of Tom Baker, he is our favorite and they are all awesome doctors in the show and its nice to see some that were in the old Dr. Who back then, in this season. I think that should bring out what about his daughter who is a time lord now? Its really something how the daleks keep going I guess ave to have a villian and is it my guess Donna is going to have a big part in the show thats great and hope her and the doctor get together it seems its leading somewhere.

David, dont leave us, quit your prior engagments, i know some actors dont want to be set and seen as 1 character there whole life. but this is doctor who. You are by far the best dr ever, and ive seen all the docs, not all the eps but many many. I think your better then tom, and thats saying a lot. I hope you stay the doc forever, and if people only relate to you as the doc, so what, least you can say that you play the best docc ever. and no one on this planet can say that, if you choose to leave then the doc who universe will loose a very good character that you made great.

Our family is ADDICTED to Doctor Who! We love, love, love David Tennant and really don’t want to see him leave. We got all episodes of Seasons 1-3 and REALLY WISH that we could get Season 4 in the U.S. Does anyone know when this comes out on video or if BBC America or Sci-Fi will be showing it?
We really hope that David doesn’t leave. However, he is talented and I can see him wanting to do other projects. Taking on Hamlet is a huge undertaking. Good for him! Come on David, no one can replace you. You are AWESOME!
I’ve been watching Dr. Who since the early eighties. Tom Baker was Dr. then, at least that was where the show was when it arrived here on pbs. The problem I have with the new series is that there doesn’t seem to be a sense that he is going anywhere. The Dr. of old with the capabilities of the TARDIS took us to wonderous places “out there” with equally facinating beings and societies. This series he just stays in London albiet with the time travel angle.
dr who is worse than heroin and WoW combined, i am scared about what horrible acts i will commit during the down time but at least the series is rolling again.

Here’s the sad truth… I loved the Who series but, going a year without a new episode??? Not a good idea. Better to hire mediocre writers than go on hold. Being of short term memory as most average viewers are, I’ll have moved on. Too bad for the sponsers and the actors. Best of luck!
Yes no season of dr.who till 2010 will suck but hey watch Seasons 1-4 of the current seasons and also watch torchwood and dair i say the sarah jane adventures there is plenty of the dr. who universe to keep you wanting more you just need to use your brain. =P
If Tennant leaves with me that will be fine because he has done a long run as a great dr. and I understand that he does not want to be like shatner and have one role define how people think of him. It was a great run and if he leaves it will suck but I personaly liked the season 1 dr. and rose…Billie Piper is freaking hot and by far the best companion.
Personaly I would rather wait for good writers to work on the show so that it does not just goto crap and cause me and a bunch of people I know to just loose intrest in it because it went no ware or they just kept bringing back old nemesis, whch is what would happen so to wait is good enough for me.

I watched Doctor Who since the 1st Doctor, i black and white, all the way up to the 10th Doctor. My fav Doctors are the 4th(Tom Baker) and the 10th(i’m sure you know who he is). I feel sorry for the next actor who is to play the 11th Doctor, as he will be compared with Tennant, unless he is as good an actor as David Tennant(or David McDonald as his real name is)so i feel sorry for the next actor. I love Doctor Who. I have watched it since 1980, when my local pbs station started running all of the 4th Doctor from the beginning. As he was my intro to the series, Tom Baker had been my favorite Doctor. I think David is brilliant, mind you, but Tom was the first, and will always be the Doctor in my mind.
However, all things must end. As sad as it is to say goodbye to each Doctor, it is always an adventure meeting the next. However much we would miss him, the show will not end with David’s leaving. We will have fond memories, and he has woven himself into the fabric of the show in a spectacular way, but there will be life and a show after him. Have faith, all.

I have been watching Doctor Who for a very long time. Its return from a long hiatus was most welcome. Lets just hope the show continues on for sometime to come. They say your favorite Doctor is the 1st Doctor that you see, which may still hold true, but David has done an excellent job and would be greatly missed as The Doctor.

I grew up watching Dr. Who in the 80’s in the U.S. and I have to say it’s the greatest show I’ve ever seen. It’ll be sad that he’s taking a break for a year until 2010. Pity they didn’t try and find a way to perhaps have someone else play another Doctor of see if they could get Christopher Eccleston to do it again. They could have set it up kind of like a prequel to the season that he was in, ie. before he met Rose, thereby not ruining the main story so far.
I agree, David Tennant really can’t leave. I mean, obviously he can but what makes “The Doctor” The Doctor? His pop of excitement, “HA!” Maybe his ability to describe a very complex piece of alien machinery at a very quick pace.Or, Perhaps, (as I believe) it’s the little idiosyncrasies that David adds to The Doctor, He makes it his own. I truly believe that there is none better. So I’m sorry David, I’m So So Sorry. But you can’t leave. We need….. The Doctor!! And I mean you!

This is crap!!! First we lose the best Dr the show ever had in Season one but then David Tennant came in and wow I think he’s pulling it great so now I’m wondering when i will get my Dr. Who fix and I’m reading that I have to wait another year come on I’m outraged!!!! And as a fan I have no control over this. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised I loved Farscape they canceled it, I lover Stargate SG1 they canceled it, Atlantis canceled, now I’m seeing the signs, I sure hope Robin Hood and Torchwood are safe, I need my BBC fix!

He appeared with Billie Piper before in Ruby in the smoke. He also been in Party Animals. David Tennant will be helping Matt. Also David will be doing some shows for 2009 while be in the Shakespeare show. Also there a new Head Writer for the Doctor Who show.

i love david tennant as the doctor, he’s great but i wouldn’t mind about it being new doctor. i mean i liked christopher eccleston and i wasn’t happy about a new one then but i didn’t understand the whole idea of the show. i’ve seen the new guy and he’s kind of younger than i’d thought he’d be. at least its not getting cancelled, that’s something to be happy about. i don’t care that the season starts at a later date in the u.s. i’m happy watching it at 5 a.m. on friday, saturday and sunday on bbc america whenever its on.

Am I the only one who thinks that Christopher Eccleston was, by far, the best Doctor of any run? Don’t get me wrong, David Tennant was enjoyable, but he didn’t hold a candle to Eccleston.

Tennant has brought a certain charisma to the character and Tate, well, her humor made it interesting. But let’s face it, no one can replace Billie Piper, she was the heart of that little group, I miss her severely
Damn David. What’re ya doin’ to me? IMHO, you’re The Doctor. Period. Only shooting 3 more specials.. my wife and I used to sit in my car for hours around midnight in the freezing cold outside the public library, using an extension cord plugged into the next-door church just to download the latest episodes the night they were released in England.

Finally some concrete news about the new season i thought they were gonna let it die for a bit, im like NOOOOOOOOO DOCTOR WHO is GOD OF SCIFI! truly though, i love David tennet as dr. who but he isnt the BEST and of course wont be the last, I do like him the most out of the two ive seen but he isnt SO much better than Christopher Eccleston, infact the only person on the series ive seen so far that i beleive belongs here more than anyone is Rose tyler, she was…Fantastic

David is one of the most talented actors so far. His acting is far above everything I have ever seen. Thus beeing the perfect Doctor, his talent would be squandered if he was only starring as our Doctor. For him and the show, playing other roles here and then would even rise his quality, so we can be prepared for an even better Doctor in 2010, what makes me even mor excited.

David Tennant is Great as Dr Who! I was pretty small when my older brother used to watch the older series and got annoyed because it was over my head. But i love this new series. I thought the first Dr was a bit of a nerd, but grew to like him. I was afraid when the first regen happened that i wouldn’t like the new dr, but he’s awesome!!! He’s fun! He’s hyper! He’s super smart! He’s mysterious! He’s funny! He friendly! He cares about everyone! I just love the way David Tennant plays the part! and he’s not a nerd, so i’m not embarrassed to be, or feel like i have to apologize for watching him. As for his first companion, Rose (Piper) i am fell in love with her. I’m still in love with here. I hope they bring her back and keep David Tennant as the Dr at least for one more season. As far as Martha, I liked her a lot, espeically because she’s so pretty, but there is just no equal to Rose! First love? Loyalty? I don’t know. Call it what you want, but i’d really like to see her character back to stay for another season. But one thing I have just got to say, get rid of Donna’s character! She’s ackward and doesn’t belong. She’s annoying as can! She constantly complains! She’s way too old looking for her part (she looks the same age as her mother’s character looks for pete’s sake!). I don’t mean to be mean, but she’s hard to look at. She’s a nag who is not interested in traveling and seeing the time/space universe. She’s there more out of necessity, whereas the first two companions were there out of an interest and curiousity in exploration, and in the Dr himself. Give us Rose and the Dr (David Tennant) back and some really good storylines.

I watched all the original doctor who series when I was a kid and it scared the pants off me! Really enjoying its return.

I have seen great shows like, “Viper,” “The Crow: Stairway to Heaven,” and “FireFly,” be cut and canceled all because one or more of the actors had another contract that caused a conflict. I am more then happy to wait one year if it means the show will go on! If “Doctor Who” were to become the next “FireFly” I would be devastated. Waiting a year, psh, just that much sweeter when it comes back!

Tennant will be back. Remember the Human/Timelord Doctor. He will be back in some form or fashion
it will be worth the wait to keep this doctor in place because no other doctor has compared to his success. however the last leading lady was by far the worst so far. hopefully this year will allow the writers to hone their craft and leave us in awe in 2010. i liked the anti establishment message of season 4 hopefully they will return with more correlations of governmental abuse.

The show has diminished greatly with the loss of Billie Piper, as Rose. It is much more interesting with her as the Dr.’s main companion. David Tennant and Billie Piper need to remain as the main characters in the show. Freema does not possess the charisma and personality of Rose. All of us in our viewing area, agree. Bring them back, PLEASE.
I enjoyed all of David’s companions, with the exception of the Donna Noble character. I grew weary of hearing “when I was a temp…”
i hate waiting… may have only been a fan since july, but i got easily hooked. plus since i live in the USA, it will probably take longer… im lucky to b able 2 rent DVDs of the doctor. but i at least want david to stay for this season. otherwise we will have too similar a plotline as we did on the last episode of season one
I m from Greece and i LOVE the show..i m very sad that david had to go and i don’t like the new doctor (maybe because i loved David so much) he is to young!!
David Tennant is definately the best Dr Who.
